Job Description:
Illumina Customer Solutions provides customers with technical support for our innovative sequencing and array technologies. As a field based Bioinformatics Support Scientist you will provide pre-sales support to our sales team and post-sales support to our service and support teams. Your ultimate goal will be to drive customer satisfaction as well as instrument and reagent sales by removing bottlenecks downstream of the instrument. You will accomplish this through analysis and design consultation, proofs of concept work, customer and field data analysis training, and informatics support for challenging issues. This position requires a broad knowledge base including the design and analysis of common NGS applications and the flexibility to quickly understand novel applications. This includes a solid knowledge of commonly used bioinformatics software packages, an understanding of networking, servers, and workstations, and of course outstanding customer service skills Ideal candidates would be located in Boston, Raleigh-Durham or Houston. Responsibilities: Troubleshoot complex issues related to Illumina software in collaboration with technical support and internal developers Provide statistical, data analysis, and experimental design support for rapid resolution of complex, quantitative, and intermittent challenges that impact customer data Consult with Pre- and Post-sales customers to facilitate adoption and uptake of NextGen Sequencing by ensuring that the customer is ready for analysis challenges Increase customer satisfaction by acting as an expert resource for customer bioinformatics questions as they relate to Illumina data or sequencing applications Develop, coordinate and deliver advanced bioinformatics and application trainings and demonstrations for customers Actively participate in product development teams capturing customer needs and feature requests, support of customer beta tests, and development of training and documentation prior to product launch Requirements: 5+ years relevant experience required. Biotech experience including experience in an external customer facing role preferred Excellent understanding of bioinformatics/genetics and experimental design Experience with a broad range of common NextGenSequencing analysis packages and workflows tools such as BaseSpace, Isaac, Tuxedo Suite, BWA, Galaxy, etc. is highly preferred. Demonstrated ability to rapidly learn new software tools A solid understanding of package installation in a Unix/Linux environment and of high performance computing (HPC) considerations when planning/installing a data analysis pipeline is also desirable Our instruments typically exist in a mixed Windows/Linux environment, so ability to deal with networking and troubleshooting in a Windows context is frequently helpful Experience with scripting languages (e.g. python, perl) will also be important for many job functions. Demonstrated written and verbal communication and training skills. Education: PhD/MS in Bioinformatics, Statistics, Genetics or related field required, or MS with extensive experience in bioinformatics
