Job Description:
Sr. Scientist, Next Generation Sequencing Position Summary Moderna is seeking an exceptionally talented and highly motivated research scientist with experience in next-generation sequencing (NGS) technologies to lead a highly collaborative, multi-disciplinary, and fast-paced team within the Platform Analytics group. The primary focus for this position is to leverage NGS platforms to analyze a broad range of RNA and DNA samples using various methods. The successful candidate will work with multiple groups across the company to develop and implement state-of-the-art methods using NGS technology.

Responsibilities

  • Design and perform complex RNA/DNA sequencing applications, including sample preparation, sequencer library creation, library quantification, and sequencer operation on the Illumina platform
  • Increase NGS performance and capacity including: improving data quality, troubleshooting failures, ensuring instrument performance, and reducing the cost of sequencing processes
  • Establish and coordinate closely with the Bioinformatics team in to develop appropriate hypotheses and data analysis pipelines and deliver robust, integrated analyses of the NGS data
  • Interact regularly and collaborate with cross-functional groups to troubleshoot and resolve complex technical problems impacting the quantity and quality of samples and data
  • Maintain up-to-date expertise in the expanding landscape of NGS-based applications and technologies and provide subject matter expertise for groups across the company
  • Work collaboratively across all disciplines within the company in order to deliver data against aggressive timelines
  • Maintain a clean and safe laboratory work area and ensure compliance to safety policies

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in life science (Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Genetics, or related science) with 2+ years of experience in an industrial setting
  • Hands on ? experience utilizing Illumina next generation sequencing platforms and familiarity with issues related to sequence quality and assembly
  • Demonstrated experience with multiple RNAseq applications such as: RNAseq, miRNA-seq, RACE, ribosomal profiling, PAR-clip, etc.
  • Expertise in a variety of molecular biology methods related to NGS sample prep including ligation, reverse-transcription, and PCR
  • Demonstrated ability to perform basic analysis of NGS data files using a command line, high-performance compute environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with both technical project management and direct management of employees and their performance
  • Demonstrated expertise in RNA biology and processes impacting mRNAs
  • Ability to use and/or modify custom written computer scripts written in Python coding language
  • Familiarity with sequence alignment tools such as Bowtie, Cufflinks, and TopHat
