Job Description:
An initiative at the Fred Hutch focused on computational education, called fredhutch.io, is looking for a full-time computational instructor who can lead a team of instructors to expand computational ability at Fred Hutch.

The Training Manager will be responsible for determining training needs and designing/conducting advanced training programs for staff at Fred Hutch. There is a significant amount of existing curriculum, including through https://www.datacamp.com/courses, but you have to understand the material well and answer questions that come up as people do the homework. This will get you started, but we certainly want someone who can gauge needs for education and develop courses accordingly.

Ideally, this would be a full-time person who could teach beginning bioinformatics and intermediate R, and then develop new courses. However, interested part-time instructors should also get in touch. Classes will be held during the workday.

Responsibilities:

  • Conducts a variety of 1-session to 7-session courses using adult learning techniques to facilitate development of skills in a variety of programming languages and related disciplines including (but not limited to):
    • R
    • Python
    • SQL
    • Bioinformatics
    • Machine Learning
  • Researches available training sources for appropriate content and method information
  • Track training effectiveness and problem areas and make training recommendations
  • May negotiate with outside consultant for purchase or development of specialized programs
  • May participate in grant/proposal writing

Qualifications

Minimum:

  • PhD in computationally-focused Biology or biologically-focused Computer Science
  • Minimum of 3-6 years of directly related experience
  • Solid knowledge of a variety of programming languages including R, Python, and SQL.
  • Solid understanding of command-line tools and high-performance computing environments
  • Understanding of the basic data types of computational biology, e.g. RNA-seq read counts
Preferred:
  • Teaching experience highly preferred
  • Experience developing course curriculum
  • Experience in grant/proposal writing
