Job Description:
The Pacific Northwest Diabetes Research Institute (PNDRI) is seeking applications for a full-time Staff Scientist/Senior Staff Scientist with broad interest and expertise in modern molecular biology and computational biology to work in the laboratory of Dr. David Galas. Position Description
The Staff Scientist/Senior Staff Scientist will be involved in all current projects in the Galas laboratory and will provide support, guidance and mentoring to research personnel at all levels. While he/she will provide management support to a variety of projects, he/she will also initiate, manage and direct his/her own projects. The candidate should be an experienced scientist, an independent thinker capable of bringing to bear novel approaches to solve complex problems, and a leader capable of fostering innovation in others in a highly collaborative atmosphere. The position will report directly to Dr. Galas.
Position Responsibilities
• Under the guidance of the laboratory head, work with research staff to determine and set priorities, solve problems, and proactively support project success.
• Independently design and conduct experiments.
• Analyze experimentally derived data and identify methodological problems, as necessary.
• Distill experimental results into biologically relevant findings and communicate them to the research teams verbally and in writing.
• Contribute to the preparation of grant proposals and research publications.
• Contribute to and oversee the development and testing of measurement and analytical pipelines specific to the needs of a project.
• Design novel strategies for high throughput molecular measurements, e.g., prepare samples and libraries for next-generation DNA and RNA sequencing.
• Monitor new developments in molecular measurement technologies, e.g., sequencing technology to help maintain the Galas Lab at the forefront of sequencing-based analysis.
• Provide training to technical staff, graduate students, and post-doctoral fellows in computational methods and next-gen sequencing, as needed.
Candidate Profile
• PhD in biological sciences with a minimum of four (4) years post-graduate experience;
• Demonstrated ability to independently design, execute and draw conclusions from research programs;
• Demonstrated success in collaborative research efforts;
• Demonstrated interest in participating in wide-ranging, multi-disciplinary research;
• Experience in applying systems and synthetic biology-based approaches to problem solving;
• Demonstrated aptitude and success in cultivating and maintaining strong relationships with peers, staff, and collaborators to build and sustain a successful research program;
• Demonstrated ability to contribute to the development of grant proposals to obtain extramural funding;
• High level of commitment to translating research-generated insights into advances that improve the human condition.
