Job Description:
Roche Sequencing Solutions in Pleasanton is seeking a highly motivated graduate intern specializing in the filed of computational biology and bioinformatics with a focus on oncology. In this position, the trainee will work side-by-side with oncology bioinformatics scientists to analyze large-scale cancer genomic data, leveraging computational, mathematical, and statistical approaches to address important scientific issues in clinical diagnostic product development. The candidate will have an opportunity to work on next-generation sequencing data analysis and may also contribute to the construction of analysis pipelines.

Responsibilities:

-Work as a member of oncology bioinformatics team on developing, testing and modifying bioinformatics methods and algorithms across a range of applications.

-Collaborate with assay development scientists to analyze studies that will support NGS procedures and project objectives.

-Give a presentation summarizing the aspect of the work while at Roche at the conclusion of the internship.

Additionally, the elected intern will be asked to participate in various intern activities, which may include workshops with leaders in the organization, our mentor program, and our Poster Symposium among other activities.

Qualifications:

-Currently enrolled in a full-time graduate program, with at least two years completed and a GPA 3.0 or better. M.S. or Ph.D. student in computational biology, bioinformatics, computer science, statistics or other relevant scientific fields.

-Experience with NGS data analysis, variant detection and annotation is highly desired.

-Proficiency in a high level scripting language (e.g. Python, R, Perl).

-Strong scientific background in genome biology and cancer biology.

-Experience of machine learning and modeling.

-Excellent communication skills.

Program Requirements:

-Currently enrolled in an accredited college/university during program calendar year 2017.

-Completed at least 2 years of college/university to be eligible for the program.

-Must have a ≥3.0 GPA.

-Minimum availability of 12 weeks (Required start on or before program Welcome Reception and end date on or after Summer End Poser Symposium).

-Previous experience in the job duties listed, either through course work or industry/academia.

-Participation in student organizations and/or other leadership experience.

What You Will Learn:

-The successful candidate will be assigned specific projects within the oncology bioinformatics group and work with guidance to gain hands-on experience on the analysis of next-generation sequencing data, particularly targeted DNA-seq datasets.

-The candidate will learn various quantitative skills in data-mining, machine learning, and algorithm development.

-The candidate will have the opportunity to watch the product development process in action, and to contribute towards Roche’s efforts to transform scientific discovery into clinical sequencing applications.

-The candidate will have the opportunity to participate scientific seminars and workshops, and network with people at Roche through various planned events and activities.
