Job Description:
Berkeley Lab’s Joint Genome Institute JGI Division has an opening for a Systems Analyst 3. Under broad supervision, you will serve as a Systems Analyst 3 to provide computational analyses of large-scale genomics datasets in support of internal R&D projects and JGI user community science projects. You will design and implement state of the art computational workflows for analysis of diverse genomic datasets, including those from resequencing, transcriptomics and epigenomics projects. You will also use in-depth knowledge of genome biology to provide input on experiment design for new high-throughput molecular biology and DNA sequencing approaches, and perform analysis of resulting data. You will work on the development of new approaches for integration of diverse data types (e.g. transcriptome and epigenome or metabolome datasets). You will exercise independent judgment in determining the appropriate methods and approaches for analyzing complex datasets. You will have a significant role in interpreting results and defining their technical and biological significance. You will communicate with JGI and external scientists at all stages of analyses, and facilitate transfer of data and tools. May train and supervise other group members. In this position you will report to the user support analysis group lead. Desired Responsibilities: -Perform computational analysis of diverse genomic datasets in support of internal R&D projects, and JGI user community science projects. -Provide custom analysis support for technology development in genomics, transcriptomics and epigenomics. -Develop computational approaches for comparative analysis of genomics datasets. --Develop computational approaches for integration of diverse data types (e.g. transcriptome and epigenome, transcriptome and metabolome). -Derive technical and biological insights from analyzed results, and communicate clearly with collaborators. -Work with production informatics to facilitate automation of frequently used analysis workflows. -Provide high quality professional reports on performed data analysis. -Present technical and analytical status in weekly meetings. -Follow prescribed practices for software version control, testing, and release engineering. -Communicate with internal and external collaborators/scientists at all stages of analysis projects. Required Qualifications: -Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Bioinformatics, Computer Science or related field with a minimum of 4 -5 years of related work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Advanced degree (Masters/PhD) preferred. -Extensive experience programming Python, Perl, R, C/C++, Java or similar in a Unix environment -Strong background in genome biology and bioinformatics. -Good understanding of molecular biology and genomic technologies -Broad knowledge of molecular biology techniques underlying DNA sequencing and analysis. -Strong decision-making skills to independently make sound judgments and recommend creative solutions to complex problems, while addressing user needs in an effective and timely manner. -Strong analytical, organizational, and record-keeping skills with attention to detail; ability to collect, record, and analyze complex and varied experimental data accurately. -Strong communication and interpersonal skills with internal and external staff, users and collaborators. Excellent public-speaking and presentation skills. -Proven ability to work on multiple projects with varying priorities while meeting tight deadlines.
