Job Description:

We are seeking an experienced creative director for the role of Team Leader - Genomics Data Presentation at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) located on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK.

The ideal candidate would be an experienced web-developer, human factor specialist or bioinformatician able to manage and develop the user focused activities of the Ensembl project including our web interface and outreach activities. Ensembl is one of the world's leading resources for genomic research and EMBL-EBI is committed to the long term expansion of value-added genomics resources delivered through the Ensembl platform. This position is part of a strategic expansion of the Ensembl and Ensembl Genomes project leadership team designed to increase the scope, efficiency and effectiveness of EMBL-EBI’s annotation resources.

The successful candidate will lead a growing team, currently consisting of 15 staff members and will be responsible for maintenance and development of the existing Ensembl web infrastructure as well as the design, development and deployment of the future of interactive data visualisation within Ensembl. The role also includes responsibility for the Ensembl outreach team, which coordinates our external engagement through social media, user support and more than 1000 face to face training courses held worldwide.

The Team Leader will work closely with other Team Leaders within the greater Ensembl project and other teams at EMBL-EBI to ensure an integrated data presentation and improved efficiency for all of EMBL-EBI’s genome annotation resources. As a member of EMBL Faculty, the post holder will report to the Vertebrate Genomics Senior Team Leader, and jointly with the Senior Team Leader and other senior Ensembl staff will develop and refine EMBL-EBI genome annotation strategy.

In addition to the above, additional responsibilities include:

• Managing the teams budget and staff; communicating with EMBL-EBI HR and grant offices.
• Participating in related projects across the EBI, collaborating closely with other Team Leaders and other staff at EBI, and in particular with other Team Leaders within the greater Ensembl project.
• Contributing to the development of the overall organisational strategy.
• Participating in appropriate external collaborations potentially including the identification of appropriate funding opportunities and applying for external grants

The EBI, part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), is a world-leading bioinformatics centre providing biological data to the scientific community with expertise in data storage, analysis and representation. EMBL-EBI provides freely available data from life science experiments, performs basic research in computational biology and offers an extensive user training programme, supporting researchers in academia and industry. Our ideal candidate will have:

• At least 6 years experience working in the field of web design including experience with relevant technologies;
• Experience of managing dynamic, modern, web development teams;
• Demonstrable portfolio of successful web based applications or solutions;
• Knowledge and experience in major web development languages;
• A solid understanding of industry best practices and standards;
• High level understanding of relevant technologies including HTML, CSS and JavaScript (HTML 4/5, CSS2+. JavaScript DOM, jQuery, JSON);
• Experience or working with UX teams and with rapid prototyping and fast learning cycles through UX and testing;
• Knowledge of SEO, web analytics, web design and product management, including product definition and delivery, and understanding of digital strategy;
• Well versed in API-first architecture as well as content and asset management and the design of data lead products;
• Experience in development for desktop, mobile and tablet;
• An appreciation and interest in emerging web development trends, technologies, frameworks etc

The Team Leader should possess excellent communication and presentation skills, an ability to lead a multi-disciplinary team and to work in a collaborative, international environment. Excellent English skills are essential.
