The successful candidate is expected to have already proven his/her ability to elaborate academic research in metallurgy and manufacturing processes. He/she is expected to develop an independent and creative research program devoted to his/her topics, initiate an externally funded research program, and establish a strong relationship with academic communities and technological companies.
Research
MINES ParisTech Centre des Matériaux wishes to strengthen its innovative materials and process developments. The successful candidate will join the Surfaces-‐Interfaces-‐Processes (SIP) team which counts about 50 members, among which 30 doctoral candidates. She/he is expected to participate to ongoing research programs on the manufacturing of innovative materials for structural and functional applications, to impulse innovative research topics and to establish a strong relationship with academia and industrial partners.
The aim of the SIP team is the mastering of the performances of materials, components and multimaterials through the mastering of their constitution and microstructure achieved by the optimization of their processing history. This implies a good knowledge of the phenomena involved under near equilibrium but also far from equilibrium conditions, for instance in rapid heating/solidification, diffusion and reaction, heat and mass transfers, flow and deformation. Dedicated laboratory scale equipment are available for innovative process developments like additive layer manufacturing (SLM technology), joining by diffusion bonding and brazing, instrumented roll bonding, (reaction) sintering, thermal plasma spraying under controlled atmosphere, cold gas dynamic powder spraying (“coldspray”), tape casting, controlled solidification... In addition to the in-‐house research facilities, the team has access to complementary materials processing equipment made available by its academic and industrial partners.
The performance of materials, components and structures are evaluated in terms of their mechanical behavior, thermo-‐physical, electrical and magnetic properties. The successful candidate will participate in the ongoing materials-process developments activities, more specifically to the additive manufacturing studies, ALM, using lasers and to those on the processing of innovative materials for power electronics (packaging, electrical connection, CEM) for more “electrical cars and airplanes”. These studies are of special interest to the automotive and aerospace industrial partners, especially the SAFRAN group with which the Centre des Matériaux develops a strong collaboration.
The successful candidate will progressively develop his/her own creative research program on these topics in close collaboration with industrial partners, starting from the present programs. He/she will take part in the training of students and engineers, supervise PhD candidates and publish in the best journals and international conferences.
Teaching
The successful candidate may take part to the various undergraduate or graduate courses and continuing education programs in which Centre des Matériaux is involved. He/she is invited to take part to the teaching of the Introductory Materials Science course for the MINES ParisTech undergraduate students . This course, co-‐organized with the CEMEF team, may soon be open to PSL Research University (alliance of Paris based Universities and “Grandes Ecoles”) and is likely to evolve.
The Post graduate courses in which Centre des Matériaux is involved are organized with Academic Alliances within the Paris area (four different master programs). A Post-‐Master curriculum, DMS (Design of Materials and Structures), taught in French or in English in close collaboration with the Safran group, is initiated in 2015 and the candidate may tutor a student in his/her 6 month long practical.
He/she will be encouraged to organize new courses to improve MINES ParisTech educational offer, especially in materials processing, functional materials.... This invitation also extends to reflections and actions taken for the evolution of the training in Metallurgy in France and specifically in the greater Paris area.
