Job Description:
Teaching and research at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel are founded on the principle of unfettered inquiry to benefit the progress of mankind. This means rejecting dogmatic positions and guaranteeing the freedom to form opinions without interference; in this way the University aims to ensure the dispersal of the principle of unfettered inquiry throughout society.

FUNCTION
Research
The candidate will perform groundbreaking research with, among others, the production of peer-reviewed academic publications in the field of structural bioinformatics. To this end, he/she will establish a bioinformatics research line founded on bioengineering sciences, computer sciences, chemistry, biophysics and biology. Of particular interest in this regard is the computational assessment of the effect of mutations on proteins, with applications in protein design and precision medicine. The theme requires an experienced candidate with extensive interdisciplinary knowledge who is expected to interact with colleague scientists from relevant research groups, departments and faculties at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB). Further, the candidate is expected to apply for grants at university, regional, national and European level, and will search for opportunities to collaborate with industry.
Teaching
The candidate will contribute both to basic courses in the relevant Bachelor of Science programs and more advanced bioinformatics courses in the relevant Master of Science programs. The candidate will also guide and supervise Master and PhD projects in the field of structural bioinformatics.
Other
The candidate will strongly contribute to leading the Interuniversity Institute of Bioinformatics in Brussels (IB)², an interdisciplinary research initiative supported by VUB and the Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB), thus requiring substantial academic management and networking skills. PROFILE
- As a formal minimum requirement, applicants must a hold a PhD awarded on the basis of an original thesis.
- The candidate is expected to endorse the educational vision of the university (full text available on the university website).

- Members of academic faculty with teaching duties are required to prove their command of the teaching language.
