Job Description:

Tenure-Eligible Faculty Position in Virology: University of Arizona

The University of Arizona (UA)’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) and the BIO5 Institute are supporting faculty hiring in areas of strategic importance, such as biomedical sciences, computational biology, and translational health.

Faculty Hiring Opportunity: The School of Animal and Comparative Biomedical Sciences in the CALS and BIO5 seek outstanding candidates for a tenure-eligible faculty position at the rank of Assistant/Associate Professor in Virology. This position is 80% research and 20% teaching, and includes appointments in CALS and as a “BIO5 fellow” at BIO5.  We seek individuals with a primary disciplinary focus in the use of cutting edge virology and immunology approaches to study the fundamental mechanisms of host and virus interactions that lead to a better understanding of animal and/or human health and to novel therapeutic approaches. Expertise in investigating complex virus-host, virus-virus or virus-microbe interactions and the application of advanced computational biology approaches to the understanding of health-related challenges related to viral infection is preferred. This represents a unique opportunity in molecular/translational virology research. Excellent opportunities exist for collaborations with faculty members in basic science and clinical departments throughout campus. This position includes start-up funding and laboratory facilities to encourage research success.

Duties and Responsibilities. Successful applicants will develop a research program that enhances UA strengths in animal/human health, viral pathogenesis, and virome and microbiome role in health and disease.. The candidate will be expected to develop and sustain a strong, externally funded research program in animal or human health, teach in the undergraduate and graduate curricula; mentor undergraduate and graduate students; and provide service and leadership to the University of Arizona, external academic and scientific communities, and to the general public. As a BIO5 fellow, the candidate is expected to participate in BIO5 interdisciplinary projects with scientists from CALS and from other UA Colleges. Successful applicants will also have interest in or ability to contribute to UA's commitment to achieving excellence through a diverse workforce.

The Candidate. The candidate must be able to successfully communicate with a variety of audiences including students, faculty, staff, community members, industry leaders, and donors through written, oral, visual, and electronic communications. Applicants must have a Ph.D. Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Microbiology/Immunology or a related discipline with emphasis on virology, meet the university standards for appointments with tenure including a demonstrated success in an established, productive research program and a record of scholarly publications in peer reviewed journals. Preferred education and experience include post-doctoral research experience, a publication record commensurate with experience, demonstration of collaborative research that crosses disciplines, and a record of excellence in teaching or mentoring.

The School of Animal and Comparative Biomedical Sciences (ACBS) and BIO5.  ACBS houses over 120 faculty and staff with professional focus in Animal Science, Aquaculture, Bioinformatics, Food Safety, Microbiology, Veterinary Science, and the Race Track Industry. A vibrant Cooperative Extension/Outreach Program also interacts with, and serves Arizona’s beef, dairy, food and equine industries. ACBS also hosts three undergraduate majors (Animal Science, Veterinary Science and Microbiology) and two Graduate Programs (Animal Science and Microbiology). Current enrollment includes over 900 undergraduate students and 23 M.S. and Ph.D. candidates. Additional information about the school and its program can be found at (http://acbs.cals.arizona.edu).

The BIO5 Institute is an interdisciplinary research unit, directly aligned with the Office for Research and Discovery and the Senior Vice President for Research. Driven by the BIO5 vision of working together across disciplines (Asking big question; Inspiring bold solutions; Improving health and life for better tomorrows), hundreds of researchers from dozens of departments and centers work together at the intersection of 5 global disciplines: Agriculture, Engineering, Medicine, Pharmacy and Science. BIO5 members and fellows serve as catalysts, enabling the Institute to develop innovative research efforts that will improve health and save lives, to advance the pace of scientific discovery, and to tackle our most critical biological challenges. BIO5 interfaces with a vast constituency in Arizona, nationally, and internationally, creating an entrepreneurial culture where leading-edge translational research turns science into real-world applications.  Additional information about BIO5 and the Institute’s facilities and research support can be found at http://BIO5.org.
