The Bay Area Cryo-EM (BACEM) Facility is a multi-user, high-throughput cryo-EM resource dedicated to single particle studies that aim for high resolution structures or the description of complex biochemical or conformational coexisting states. Dedicated, expert personnel will run the facility. One KRIOS microscope will be housed at UC Berkeley in Stanley Hall.
The California Institute for Quantitative Biosciences (QB3) is one of four Governor Gray Davis Institutes for Science and Innovation established in 2000 to ensure the future of the California economy by promoting research and innovation. QB3 is a cooperative effort between the state of California, private industry, venture capital, and the University of California campuses at Berkeley, San Francisco, and Santa Cruz.
QB3 harnesses the quantitative sciences of physics and engineering to unify our understanding of biological systems at all levels of complexity, from atoms and molecules to cells, tissues, and entire living organisms. QB3 scientists make discoveries that drive the development of technologies, products, and wholly new industries, ensuring that California remains competitive in the 21st century.
QB3's goals are to fuel the California bioeconomy; to support research and training in quantitative biosciences; and to translate academic research into products and services that benefit society.
Responsibilities
The BACEM Computer Support Analyst will assist in setting up the site, and be responsible for provisioning, installation, and configuration of hardware and software related to the microscope and cameras.
Upon establishing the facility, the Computer Support Analyst will provide ongoing maintenance and operation of the computer system, and will participate in research and development, to enable continuing innovation and automation. The Computer Support Analyst will also be responsible for the operation and maintenance of associated software, running on a variety of UNIX systems, the system management and maintenance of an in-house cluster and workstations. S/he will work with BACEM users, enabling them to use external computational facilities to solve large-scale processing problems. One such external facility will be NERSC (National Energy Research Supercomputing Center), and the Computational Support Analyst will engage with personnel at NERSC to optimize the use of the NERSC resources for cryo-EM data analysis.
Provides system administration/system engineering and user support for BACEM projects and operations.
· Analyzes complex bioinformatics software packages or formulates logic for new systems, including researching and recommending innovative/automated approaches for data collection, storage and backup.
· Build, debugs and optimizes scientific software packages for biological/cryo-EM analysis, Software may run and need on local BACEM server, NERSC, UCB or other system and optimization may depend on system.
· Installs/builds/re-builds existing servers, configuring hardware, peripherals, services, authentication systems, storage, etc., meeting the required standards for the projects.
· Prepares and maintains system/programming documentation.
· Maintains security configurations. Investigate and troubleshoot security issues, working with the UCB intrusion detection team.
· Analyzes, installs, modifies and supports operating systems and software
· Support the BACEM users running scope operation and data processing software packages
· Perform daily system monitoring, including verifying integrity of hardware, server resources, system and key processes. Reviews system and application logs and verifies that schedule jobs (e.g., backups) have run to completion. Archive/purge files as necessary.
· Support BACEM users' needs and questions. Assist both new and expert users with system access, workflow, queue management, etc.
Required Qualifications · Willingness to engage and support the scientific team.
· Up-to-date knowledge of network protocols (IPv4, Infiniband, fibrechannel, IPv6), UNIX and supercomputing systems, and willingness to keep current.
· Knowledge of applications programming technologies, tools and protocols (shell scripting, Python, javascript, MySQL, OpenMPI, C++).
· Skills necessary to communicate effectively both in writing and verbally, and can explain technical concepts to novice users.
· Ability to work independently.
Education/Training:
Bachelors degree is related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
Salary
Annual Salary Range: $67,500.00 - $85,000.00
