Job Description:
The Department of Biology at the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD), seeks a postdoctoral associate to conduct research in the feasibility of installing an acoustic deterrent system at Lock and Dam 5 in the Mississippi River. The proposed system is designed to stop the upstream migration of silver carp and bighead carp. The successful candidate will be mentored by Dr. Allen Mensinger. This opportunity is supported through a grant from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. The selected applicant would be an employee of the University of Minnesota, Duluth Campus.

Job Responsibilities:

• Review of scientific literature and technical reports combined with direct interviews of personnel associated with the design, assessment and implementation of the barrier.

• Plan site visits with bioacoustics and hydrology experts at Lock and Dam 5 and other sites that use acoustic deterrents.

• Conduct acoustic sound surveys to assess the soundscape in which the acoustic barrier must operate.

• Assess hydrological records and compare to fish swimming abilities to assess the effect that altering the hydrology will have on the upstream migration of invasive carp.

• Integrate latest developments in invasive carp sensory physiology to assess feasibility of acoustic deterrent

. • Combine literature reviews, site visits, interviews, input from bioacoustic and hydrology experts with the latest information on bigheaded carp hearing to critically evaluate the effectiveness of an acoustic deterrent system at Lock and Dam 5.

Required Qualifications:

1. Met the essential requirements for a PhD (including an committee approved thesis) in biological, fisheries, natural sciences, or bioinformatics/biostatistics discipline, at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

1. Experience in passive acoustic monitoring, and bioinformatics/biostatistics;

2. Excellent quantitative skills including experience analyzing acoustic data;

3. Excellent written and verbal communication in English;

4. Computational skills including Matlab;

5. Evidence of publication in peer review journals;

6. Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment;

7. A record of working effectively with a diverse workforce

8. Demonstrated familiarity with acoustic propagation principles

The Department of Biology is the largest program in the Swenson College of Science and Engineering at the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD), with over 650 undergraduate students, 50 graduate students, and 25 full time faculty members. For undergraduate students, we offer B.S. degrees in Biology and Cell & Molecular Biology. M.S. and Ph.D. students are most often advised through the Integrated Biosciences (http://www.d.umn.edu/ibs) and Water Resources Science (http://wrs.umn.edu/) graduate programs.
