Job Description:
The University of Pittsburgh Dental Medicine, Oral Biology Department, Center for Craniofacial and Dental Genetics (CCDG) is seeking a Unix Systems Administrator to manage a Linux-based computational cluster and perform basic programming tasks. Responsibilities include maintaining a 20-node Linux based computational cluster, which is housed at the University of Pittsburgh's Network Operations Center (NOC). The candidate will be responsible for performing tasks related to the maintenance and upgrade of this cluster, including (but not limited to) configuring nodes, adding/deleting users, installing and updating software, and monitoring cluster performance. The candidate will also be required to periodically communicate with NOC personnel regarding cluster operations and maintenance. Cluster-related duties may occasionally require working in the evenings and weekends in the case of emergencies. The candidate must be an expert in the installation and configuration of the CentOS and Red Hat Enterprise-x86 operating systems on server class hardware. The candidate should also be experienced with TCP/IP networking, NFS, and using the YUM software package manager (or similar package manager such as RPM, dpkg, Torque, etc.) Experience with the configuration and running of Sun Grid Engine (SGE) is a must, along with knowledge of IPMI and iptables. Additionally, the candidate may be required to perform some basic programming in LAMP-based web applications development (PHP, Apache, MySQL). Knowledge of Python, JavaScript and Java is a must. Familiarity with the use of web-based databases is a must, and knowledge of R statistical programming language is strongly preferred. The ideal candidate should be responsible, proactive and detail-oriented in their position serving a team of about 20 research scientists working on bioinformatics projects that involve the analysis of large-scale human genomic data. The candidate should have the ability and willingness to learn new skills such as programming languages and bioinformatics expertise on the job. The candidate must have a strong Unix and shell scripting proficiency. A minimum of 3 years of Unix systems administration experience is required for this position. Successful completion of a Unix system administration proficiency exam or equivalent training certificate is required of the applicant. A Bachelor's degree in a STEM-related field is preferred. Minimal level of education is a Bachelor's Degree. Degree(s) in a STEM-related field is preferred. Must be proficient in Unix system administration and have successfully completed Unix system administration proficiency exam or equivalent training certificate. A minimum of 3 years of Unix systems administration experience is required for this position.
