Multidisciplinary positions are anticipated within the Environmental Laboratory of the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (http://www.erdc.usace.army.mil/Locations/EL.aspx). Specifically, the Environmental Genomics and Systems Biology (EGSB) team within the Environmental Processes Branch of the Environmental Processes and Engineering Division is soliciting applications from individuals specializing in mechanistic toxicology, structural biology, bioinformatics, or computational biology. Candidates are being recruited to participate in and contribute to a diverse suite of multi-year, multimillion dollar, multidisciplinary research projects for continued expansion of the team’s capabilities and research portfolio. The EGSB team is currently executing a wide spectrum of intramural and extramural funded research in systems toxicology, biological networks, synthetic biology, predictive toxicology, genomics, bioinformatic data mining of next-generation sequencing data, adverse outcome pathway development, toxicological modes of action discovery, herbicide resistance mechanisms, structural biology, chemoinformatics, and molecular modeling. In addition to conducting funded research, candidates are encouraged to demonstrate promise for developing innovative new research ideas through contribution to grant writing to expand funded R&D efforts. Ph.D. graduates and/or candidates with all-but-dissertation (ABD) status are encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to candidates who possess all or some of the following qualifications: (1) a Ph.D. or M.Sc. degree in bioinformatics or computational sciences with a focus on biological systems; (2) proficient in computational programming and algorithm development on Linux OS using multiple languages such as Perl, Java, C++ and Python; (3) familiar with existing open-source and commercial bioinformatics software (e.g., BLAST, Blast2Go, Modeller, AutoDock Vina, Gromacs, GeneSpring and IPA), statistical/modeling tools (R, SAS and MatLab), and bioinformatic databases (PDB, UniProt and KEGG); (4) working experience in homology-based protein modeling and molecular modeling (ligand-receptor docking and molecular dynamics simulation); and (5) capable of applying existing tools or developing new tools to solve novel biological problems. As a team member, the selected candidate is expected to carry out research plans, present research findings to both experts and non-experts, and publish research results in peer-reviewed journals.

Positions will be open to U.S. citizens and foreign nationals, and may be filled as an on-site contractor or Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) postdoctoral fellow (http://orise.orau.gov/science-education/internships-scholarships-fellowships/postdocs.aspx). Salary is commensurate with experience.
