The Buck Institute is the independent institute in the U.S. devoted solely to research on aging and age-related diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, cancer, arthritis, diabetes, and stroke. Our mission is to increase the healthspan, the healthy years of life. Awarded a federal grant to establish interdisciplinary research in a new field called Geroscience, Buck scientists work in a unique, collaborative environment that allows scientists to initiate studies quickly and respond to new opportunities in fields such as stem cell research and regenerative medicine. Our scientists represent a variety of complementary fields, including genetics, epigenetics, biochemistry, molecular biology, bioenergetics, age-associated disease; and technological disciplines such as genomics, proteomics, protein interaction networks and bioinformatics.
The Buck Institute, which was designed by world famous architect I.M. Pei, is located in Novato, California, 25 miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge.
The Visiting PhD Student is assigned a project within the Jasper lab under the guidance of Dr. Heinrich Jasper. The visiting PhD student will use a variety of standard laboratory experimental procedures or a limited number of specialized procedures to meet the needs of research projects. Works on problems of moderate scope in which analysis of situation or data requires a review of identifiable factors. Performs a variety of technical applications that are semi-routine in nature. Applies job skills and established policies and procedures to perform a variety of technical tasks and support operations. Exercise judgment within defined procedures and practices. Under general supervision, ensures timely and accurate performance of responsibilities for multiple projects or a single functional area. Prioritizes daily activities to complete tasks and projects assigned by others.
