The Director of Scientific Operations and Engagement has responsibility for promoting and enhancing the full range of activities of the Biotechnology Resource Center (BRC) at the Institute of Biotechnology at Cornell University (www.biotech.cornell.edu). The Director provides the following services for the BRC: • Identification of emerging biotechnologies and funding opportunities • Assessment of campus needs for new instrumentation and services • Evaluation and optimization of instrumentation and applications across core facilities • Promotion of BRC services and life sciences research activities both on campus and externally, including providing outreach, workshops, and website/social media presence. The BRC includes core facilities that offer resources and services in genomics, proteomics and mass spectrometry, imaging, bioinformatics and bio-IT. The Director fosters interactions between faculty researchers and the BRC, and among the BRC core facilities, to promote cutting edge, innovative life sciences research. In concert with faculty and BRC core facility directors, the Director assesses interest in, and need for, emerging biotechnology instrumentation, infrastructure and services. The Director catalyzes the development of service linkages, instrument acquisition, and outreach to make existing and emerging technologies known to the greater academic community. Job responsibilities for this position include: Scientific and workflow assessment of emerging biotechnology instrumentation, infrastructure and services. Facilitating effective communication with faculty, core facility directors and other stakeholders regarding the need for new and existing services and equipment. Providing leadership, grant-writing and coordination for instrumentation grants. Promoting the BRC to internal and external audiences using the Institute website, presentations, written communications, and digital media, including leading user group assessments, designing content and service flow, directing third-party vendor participation, testing, and roll-out to users. Establishing effective relationships with BRC core facility directors, faculty, researchers, vendors, and colleagues of related professional organizations. Providing educational seminars and workshops for faculty and others interested in BRC technologies and services. Area of responsibilities/description of work This postdoctoral research position is immediately available in the research group of Dr. Margaret Sällberg Chen. The position is for a scientist with background in disease conditions associated with dysfunctional oral microbiota. The candidate will be part of a research team that aims at understanding new mechanistic insights of in patients suffering from diseases related to infection or microbiota dysfunction and microbial translocation. The work comprises monitoring of microbiome/metabolome dynamics to study interactions between oral microbiota and pathological reactions including cancer. Disease-specific markers will be investigated to develop diagnostic methods and individualized therapeutic strategies to improve human health. The post doctoral fellows to be recruited to the project will be part of a multidisciplinary team and are expected to take active part in collaborative efforts, in line with the overall aims of this project. The studies will require methodological skills - from handling of human biopsy/biofluid to RNA/DNA purification quality controls for sequencing and metabolomics analysis. The project is suitable for highly motivated researchers in molecular life sciences, especially those who have already knowledge of NGS bioinformatics workflow and resources. Type of scholarship Karolinska Institutet awards scholarships to pursue postdoctoral studies. This educational scholarship, which is paid for a maximum of two years within four years after the receipt of a PhD or the equivalent, is tax-exempt. The amount is set for twelve months at a time and is paid out on a monthly basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.
