There is a vacancy for a permanent associate professor position at the Department of Biology (BIO) within fish health (bacteriology).   Work tasks / research field / teaching Fish health is an expanding field at the University of Bergen (UiB). It is a goal to be in the research front nationally and internationally, and to be a leading institution on expertise on fish health education. The Fish health groups at BIO are central to research and education within fish health and in the work for healthy fish in Norwegian aquaculture. Research is important for the aquaculture industry, in particular in the production of farmed fish and interactions with wild fish stocks. Research in bacteriology aims to clarify fundamental properties for pathogenic bacteria and disease processes for farmed species. The research shall promote curiosity driven science in the field, ranging from pure basic research to applied problems.   The research at BIO is organized in 14 research groups. The fish health field encompasses three research groups: Fish Immunology, Fish Diseases and the Sea Lice Research Centre. Research in fish health is both experimental and related to fieldwork. The most important fields are immunology, parasitology, bacteriology and virology, where for example methods in molecular biology, cell biology, anatomy/histology/cytology, bioinformatics and evolutionary biology is used. The research groups have modern and well equipped research laboratories, including specialized facilities for fish research. Teaching in fish health is included in the position. Completed education program in fish health provides authorization aqua medicine, and the right to use the title aqua veterinarian. In 2015 BIO was awarded resources to expand the annual intake of students in the program from 10 to 25 students. The lab is very collaborative and consists of microbiologists, bioinformaticians, cell biologists and mouse biologists so there is ample capacity for the individual to develop new skill sets. The Lab maintains an extensive bacterial culture collection of >300 species and has sequenced all species to generate reference genome database (Forster et al. 2016. NAR). The individual will use advanced genomic analysis methods and generally focus on establishing the phylogenies and accessory genomes of dominant bacterial clades the human intestinal microbiota to assist in identifying functional attributes of bacteria that promote health. Our lab is in the Department of Genetics and Genomic Sciences and the Institute for Genomics and Multi-scale Biology. Our lab (80% computation + 20% experimental) pioneered the fast growing field of bacterial epigenomics with different forms of DNA methylations (e.g. 6mA, 4mC) beyond 5mC (the one extensively studied in human). Recent work by us and others discovered that not only does 6mA exists in eukaryotes including human, but it also has significant functional roles. A major focus of our lab is to explore this young and promising field of 6mA epigenomes, discover other novel types of DNA modifications, their relationship to well-studied DNA/histone modifications, and make fundamentally new discoveries about human diseases: infectious diseases, cancers and mental disorders. We have unique expertise in the use of third generation sequencing (single molecule real-time, ~20kbp read length, and the emerging nanopore technique) with advantages of detecting different types of DNA modifications, single molecule-level epigenetic phasing, full-length transcript isoforms, complex structural variations. Successful candidates will have unique opportunities to i) build on our unique expertise, large scale collection of clinically relevant samples and a strong network of collaborators, ii) take the lead role in multiple projects on the innovative use of third-generation sequencing and systems biology to pioneer the mapping and characterization of novel forms of DNA methylations in eukaryotic genomes for both basic biology and clinical applications. 2016/17 PhD program at IMT School for Advanced Studies Lucca Applications are now being accepted for scholarships for the Computer Science and Systems Engineering (CSSE) curriculum within the 2016/17 PhD program at the IMT School for Advanced Studies Lucca (www.imtlucca.it), one of the five Schools of Excellence in Italy. Perspective students should preferably have a master-level background in computer science, engineering, physics, mathematics, statistics, or in a related field. The CSSE curriculum provides the doctoral student with a solid interdisciplinary background to analyze cyber-physical systems and provide solutions to a huge variety of complex engineering problems. The program of studies is based on a set of common courses, covering the fundamentals of numerical linear algebra and numerical methods for differential equations, computer programming, dynamical systems and control, numerical optimization, stochastic processes, and machine learning.
