The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (UTSW) has recently launched a fully philanthropically funded Department of Bioinformatics with a scientific focus on the integrative computational analysis and modeling of complex biomedical processes in high-dimensional and multi-modal data sets. The program is driven under the premise that bioinformatics in its core is a pattern recognition problem whose solution builds on computational theory and algorithms that are sharable across all biomedical data types and research applications. This would include restructuring the existing computer science minors and online AS degree, developing a computer science major, increasing the participation of women, and assessing and growing the program. An interest in collaborating with other programs and departments such as GIS and Biology (Bioinformatics), and Marketing is desirable. The successful candidate will also be expected to engage in research, including supervising student research. We seek to hire an Assistant Professor with research interests in environmental microbiology. Emphasis is placed on understanding the broad factors affecting aquatic ecosystems in natural and urban settings from local to regional scales. Specific areas of interest may include natural and human-influenced dynamics of microbial communities, the detection and mitigation of waterborne pathogens, algal blooms, and/or biofilms. Candidates using metagenomics/bioinformatics approaches to these questions are particularly encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will complement the three broad areas of interest within the water cluster, including human impacts on the global hydrologic cycle, urban water and wastewater systems, and linkages between water and energy systems.
