About BSC: BSC-CNS (Barcelona Supercomputing Center – Centro Nacional de Supercomputación) is the National Supercomputing Facility in Spain and manages MareNostrum, one of the most powerful supercomputers in Europe. The mission of BSC-CNS is to investigate, develop and manage information technology in order to facilitate scientific progress. With this aim, special dedication has been taken to areas such as Computer Sciences, Life Sciences, Earth Sciences and Computational Applications in Science and Engineering. All these activities are complementary to each other and very tightly related. In this way, a multidisciplinary loop is set up: our exposure to industrial and non-computer science academic practices improves our understanding of the needs and helps us focusing our basic research towards improving those practices. Within this framework BSC-CNS is looking for a candidate to manage the Life Sciences department. Look at the BSC experience: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VRkEii7OzRE   Life Sciences Department: The research program integrates different independent research leaded by senior scientists who work in different aspects of computational biology, ranging from bioinformatics for genomics to computational biochemistry. The Department makes a large effort to develop applications which take profit of HPC and Big Data environments. The program is originated as a collaborative effort with other institutions like ICREA, IRB-PCB-UB and the National Institute of Bioinformatics. Life Sciences Department main goals are to gain a deep insight into the origin, evolution and function of living organisms using theory and computation and to develop related HPC and Big Data applications. Our focus goes from a global analysis of living entities understood as complex systems to detailed studies of key interactions at the sub-atomic level. Overall, our objective is to make theory and simulation as one of the driving forces to the advance of research in life sciences.   Main Responsibilities: Report and advice, in the areas of competence, to the Board of Trustees and Board of Directors of BSC. Ensure the strategic research of Life Sciences, through strategic planning and team leadership. Contribute and participate in national and international competitive projects. Control of the Department’s budget, with the support of the financial department. Participate in the decisions of the Board of Directors of BSC. Manage the Principal Investigator’s teams, ensuring the scientific and technical standards of the Centre are met. Define and guide the achievement of the objectives of the department. Foster and participate in relevant publications in peer reviewed journals.        [More]

The Biotechnology Centre (BIOTEC) is an interdisciplinary centre focused on molecular bioengineering, proteomics, genomics, biophysics, stem cells and computational biology (for more details please refer to: http://tu-dresden.de/die_tu_dresden/zentrale_einrichtungen/biotec). BIOTEC is recruiting 2 Research Group Leaders (E 14 / E 15 TV-L) - with the option leading to permanent positions - with internationally outstanding scientific accomplishments to start their independent research careers working in the fields of the BIOTEC encompassing proteomics, protein chemistry, biophysics, systems biology and stem cells. BIOTEC would also consider applicants working in other research areas with relevance to our central themes. The initial appointment is for 6 years according to the Fixed Term Research Contracts Act (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz – WissZeitVG). The positions will give you an excellent chance for further academic qualification. Depending on the results of an evaluation before the end of the 4th year, a permanent position in accordance with a tenure track procedure leading to a W2/W3 chair is available. To this end, based on positive evaluation of accomplishments and results in research and teaching, a result oriented competitive tenure procedure in the relevant research area will be initiated. In addition to salary for 6 years, the positions each include a technical assistant, secretarial support, funding for a PhD student and a start-up package for running costs. BIOTEC also provides a comprehensive range of state-of-the-art technology platforms including massively parallel DNA sequencing, mass spectrometry, FACS, advanced light microscopy, microstructuring and others (see http://www.biotec.tu-dresden.de/technologyplatform/services.htm).    Tasks: The successful applicant will conduct independent interdisciplinary research in their research field. This includes the conception and coordination of a research program, the involvement of collaborative partners and the successful implementation of research activities and publications as well as teaching, mainly in our Masters programs. Applicants establishing their first research group are encouraged to apply.    [More]
