Job Description:
The work is in this position as an expert-level Biologist and/or Computer Scientist, with an emphasis in bioinformatics, provides expert leadership and direction for the laboratory and S&T in the development of bioinformatics analyses of phytopathogen genomes and pipeline development for regulatory purposes.

Salary Information: First time hires to the Federal government normally start at the lowest rate of the salary range for the grade selected.

Responsibilities:

The duties described are for the full-performance level. At developmental grade levels, assignments will be of more limited scope, performed with less independence and limited complexity.

The duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Serves as a computing expert on a team consisting of molecular biologists and plant pathologists that design, develop, and/or modify existing software to help solve scientific computing problems.
  • Designs and conducts tests of software function and performance in the areas of genomic information processing and distributed file systems.
  • Participates with teams of scientists in completing phases of larger projects by developing bioinformatic processes and workflows, which are part of those projects.
  • Investigates the suitability of specific methods, algorithms, and software approaches to particular assignments. Specifies and selects commercially available solutions whenever possible.
  • Assemble teams of experts and specialists at diverse work environments and ensure that this team remains focused on common, obtainable, objectives to solve crucial and/or complex problems.
  • Serves as a technical authority for S&T scientists in the area of scientific computing and associated automation technology. Provides technical guidance and application software support for scientific computing in areas such as sequence analysis, dynamic web programming and database design.
  • Must display a high degree of independence and originality in formulating ideas, developing new approaches, methods and techniques to develop solutions where precedents may be inapplicable.
  • Establish and maintain contacts to develop productive working relationships with diverse individuals who may have counter purposes, and is expected to retain scientific credibility and a high level of professionalism even in a potentially hostile environment.
Travel Required: Occasional travel - Travel for training and work assignments may be required
