Job Description:
Health Informatics Centre (HIC), within Dundee University School of Medicine, has a fantastic opportunity for an experienced database professional wishing to be involved in leading edge medical research.

You will be working as a Data Engineer in the Research Data Linkage team, you will maintain and operate a clinical e-data repository; containing over 30 years of medical histories for nearly 20% of the Scottish population.

Key aspects of the job include:

  • Using HIC’s clinical data repository, identify and create extracts to support clinicians in answering fundamental research questions.
  • Routine and ad-hoc data curation activities requiring hands-on development of bespoke ETL and cleaning scripts using languages such as SQL and Python.
  • Continued integration of structured and unstructured datasets into the master repository, for example: Genetics – mongodb; Imaging – DICOM PACS.
  • Maintain and enhance security policies deployed to protect unauthorised access to the data, while still supporting medical, and other research.
  • HIC works in a field with many opportunities to innovate. This position requires someone who can think out of the box; someone wanting to challenge established practices and look at innovative ways to solve complex health-data management problems. Being proactive, with a can-do attitude will be a distinct advantage.
Ideally, you will already be a practicing data engineer, with proven expertise in SQL scripting and relational database design skills, perhaps gained while working within a corporate or research Data Warehouse. You must have demonstrable experience building and maintaining ETL process streams.

You will ideally have an understanding and experience of working with health and patient data including the required governance and ethics. You should be used to working in a close team environment, delivering service under pressure within tight deadlines.

Summary of Skills, Experience and Qualifications

Skills:

  • Excellent relational database skills, with an emphasis on T-SQL scripting skills and MS SQL.
  • Experience in manipulating and management of very large datasets.
  • Experience with physical relational (and non-relational) database design.
  • Solid experience in query tuning and storage design for high-performance data access.
  • Proven experience in ETL techniques, tools (Python, or similar) and design.
Qualifications:
  • A degree in a related discipline such as computer science, mathematics or statistics.
  • A PhD in a related discipline such as Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Mathematics or Statistics.
