Job Description:
The Center for Genome Research and Biocomputing invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, Biocomputing Systems Engineer position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Director.

The Center for Genome Research and Biocomputing at Oregon State University collaborates with and assists life and environmental scientists using cutting-edge genomic and computational techniques. An important component of the CGRB’s mission is to develop and provide access to high-performance computing infrastructure, often requiring novel hardware and software solutions. This includes both a research-focused infrastructure, and the education-focused Advanced Cyberinfrastructure Teaching Facility (ACTF).

We are an enthusiastic team of laboratory scientists, data and computer scientists, business professionals, and researchers serving OSU and beyond.

Appointment may be at the entry level, or advanced level, depending on skills, training, and experience. This position will work closely with CGRB staff and the OSU community to provide a high quality of service and promote the CGRB’s mission of bioinformatics and biocomputing education and research. Responsibilities, according to appointment level, include research, design, implementation, and maintenance of information technologies for collecting, storing, analyzing, and disseminating large data sets.

Additional responsibilities include software and server management in a production Linux environment, as well as providing customer service for users. Appointee is required to collaborate in a collegial and inclusive fashion with CGRB staff and clients in the execution of all job functions.

Position Duties:

70% Scientific computing research and development

As a high-performance computing resource serving a broad clientele, the CGRB requires robust and sophisticated systems to keep our users at the forefront of computational biology. This position will contribute to education and research excellence by:

  • Managing access to Linux-based computing clusters
  • Systems administration, including deployment, networking, authentication, software management, and ongoing resource management
  • Incorporation of new technologies, including integration with cloud services
  • Developing solutions for data protection, backup, and provenance
  • User support
  • Supervising undergraduate employees in these same areas
30% Biocomputing and bioinformatics research

Collaborate with CGRB clients on funded research projects requiring skills in data science, bioinformatics, computational biology and/or biocomputing. Includes researching and deployment of new tools and algorithms and contributions to the preparation of grant proposals, writing of publications, and attendance at professional conferences

Minimum/Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree, with a minor, certificate in computer science or related field.
  • Demonstrated excellent written and oral communication skills
  • At least one of the following:
    • Proficiency in administrating and configuring Linux
    • operating systems
    • Proficiency in C, C++, or Java
    • Proficiency in network configuration and management
This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per OSU Standard 576-055-0000 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.

Preferred (Special) Qualifications:

  • Proficiency with networking technologies in a Linux environment
  • Proficiency in multi-host systems automation
  • Proficiency with virtualization technologies
  • Proficiency with data management and backup
  • Experience in software development
  • Experience with containerization technologies
  • Experience with utilizing cloud resources, especially Amazon Web Services (AWS)
  • Experience in SQL
  • Experience in project management or team-based systems administration
  • Experience with high-performance computing use in a higher-education setting
  • Interest or experience in data science, bioinformatics, machine learning, or related
  • Experience working in a service position
  • A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity
Working Conditions / Work Schedule: This position works in an office with a conventional work schedule.

This position requires a clear and unambiguous commitment to compliance of all National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) regulations for Division I (FBS) universities. No
