Job Description:
As part of a BBSRC and a Newton Fund / GCRF BBSRC research project a research fellow position is available as a shared post between the groups of Christine Tait-Burkard and Mick Watson for a period of three years. The first project focuses on epidemiological surveillance of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) in the Philippines. The position available will primarily focus on the development of genomic subpopulation pull-downs, library preparation and sequencing technique optimisation, as well as the development of bioinformatics pipelines for the analysis of sequence data. The second project involves research into Marek’s disease virus (MDV) in chickens, and the position again will focus sequencing library preparation (PacBio IsoSeq) and bioinformatics analysis. You will work within two interactive research groups and will conduct independent research on developing sequencing strategies and analysis thereof. You will provide assistance and training for other staff members and collaborators as necessary. You will have a PhD (or be near completion) in a relevant subject. You should be able to demonstrate extensive experience of one or more of the following techniques: molecular biology techniques, RNA extraction and handling, cDNA normalisation, 5’ CAP selection, PacBio Iso-Seq sequencing, MinION sequencing, analysis of second and third generation sequencing data. You must have an interest and experience in computational biology and the ability to communicate complex information clearly, orally and in writing and be capable of independent working. You will have experience of writing and publishing first-author publications. You will have experience of working with Linux and HPC and be experienced in using a scripting language (Perl/Python/R) and be comfortable with large datasets. You should be experienced using Mothur and QIIME for microbiome data analysis. Fixed Term for 36 months
