Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

Duties/Responsibilities include:

(1) In conjunction with the BRC Bioinformatics Facility and other staff, develop new or improve existing pipelines for genome assembly, DNA sequence analysis, graphical visualization, and data re-formatting.

(2) Manage bioinformatics for all applicable genotyping projects (supervise the running standard SNP analysis pipelines and results reporting, trouble shoot pipeline problems) and directly communicate with facility users regarding their results.

(3) Establish and maintain mutually beneficial collaborations that promote improved bioinformatics strategies for Cornell faculty and other researchers.

(4) Troubleshoot internal systems problems (i.e., wet lab and DNA sequencing) and modify standard operating procedures to reflect current “laboratory best practice” based on DNA sequence quality control (QC) data.

(5) Manage and coordinate work conducted by a team of programmers, IT specialists and bioinformaticians to complete a custom Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) that interfaces automated DNA sample submission, sample processing, data collection, data analysis, data distribution, reporting and client billing. This task will require detailed knowledge of lab, sequencing and data analysis workflows.

(6) Communicate information on projects and significant findings, both in written and oral form, to students, faculty and other researchers. Teach bioinformatics and/or applications modules for GBS workshops.

This is a two-year term position with the possibility of extension, contingent on available work and funding.

  DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

Education: Ph.D. in Biology, Genetics, Population Genetics, Computer Sciences or related field.

Skills and technical training required: Scientific programming skills; Excellent oral and written communication skills; Research experience and advanced knowledge in at least one of the following areas: Statistical analysis of genome-scale data sets; Quantitative genetics, population and/or evolutionary genomics; Capable of designing and implementing independent research projects; Interest in working on interdisciplinary research projects.
