Job Description:
CAMRIS is seeking a bioinformaticist to work at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research in Silver Spring, MD. Responsibilities: -Perform knowledge engineering functions between the IT-based staff and the medical research science staff. -Consult with users, management, vendors, and technicians to determine computing needs and system requirements. -Develop new and improved concepts, principles and techniques that will advance the body of knowledge of information management and apply advanced computer science methods and techniques to solve complex computer processing requirements for data analysis, inventory management and clinical system interface. -Design, develop, test and document software, hardware and interface requirements. -Enhance existing systems used for genotypic, phenotypic, epidemiological and demographic data. -Apply theoretical expertise and innovation to create or apply new technology. -Develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's), templates and forms (including, but not limited to, statistical programming plan SOP’s and templates). -Effectively interpret analysis and write reports as requested. -Participate in staffing decisions and direct training of subordinates short of inherently Government functions. -Provide all job-related progress reports/technical reports as required. -Maintain a safe workplace ensuring that he/she is aware of and observes appropriate safety and occupational health rules and regulations. Required to attend safety training relative to his/her position and report any infractions of safety procedures to the facility Safety Officer. -Provide technical assistance and participate on proposal writing projects when applicable. -Attend relevant seminars, scientific conferences and meetings. Qualifications: -Requires an MA (or BA with at least three years of experience) in bioinformatics, biology, epidemiology, statistics or a related field. -Expertise in data analysis (parametric and nonparametric statistical tests, linear modeling, hierarchical clustering and principal components analysis) of large, multidimensional datasets is essential. -Requires knowledge and experience writing scripts in languages such as Perl, Python or Java and using common software packages for high content data analysis such as R, Matlab or SAS. -Requires demonstrated capability to analyze large datasets to identify genomic features associated with microbial drug resistance and virulence and to determine phylogenetic relationships among bacterial strains. -Knowledge of the principles and methods for de novo assembly of next-generation sequencing data, genome annotation, detection of single nucleotide variants and genomic rearrangements, comparative genomics and phylogenetic analysis is desired. -Knowledge of public databases of gene and protein networks is desired. -Demonstrated ability to perform epidemiological analyses is highly desired. -Experience creating analytical pipelines using COTS, open source and custom software is highly desired.
