Job Description:
-Will use molecular biology techniques to investigate the role of putative virulence genes present in emergent E. coli pathogens from different countries. Proficiency in PCR, real-time PCR, electrophoresis, cloning, mutagenesis techniques, bacterial expression systems required. Will use DNA amplification techniques, gel electrophoresis, real-time PCR, cloning and protein expression and purification.

-Conduct protein analysis on virulence genes identified among E coli emergent pathogens including western blot analysis and ELISA assays. Conduct gene expression assays to evaluate environmental factors associated with virulence gene expression.

-Work on genomic DNA sequencing for unique E. coli emergent pathogens isolated from children with diarrhea. Isolate and purify DNA, measure purity and calculate DNA concentrations. Submit DNA for sequencing, analyze DNA reads and assembled contigs using online software to evaluate gene topology, gene size, extrachromosomal elements, virulence genes, pathogenicity islands, among other analysis.

-Competent in bioinformatics for analysis of bacterial genome sequences, including genome-wide-comparison, detection of novel genes or pathogenicity islands, phylogenetic analysis, de novo genome assembly, among other techniques.

-Will conduct animal experiments predominantly on mice. Responsibilities include strict recordkeeping of all procedures, stay up-to-date on animal training, administer treatments and other procedures to animals following animal regulations established at the University at Buffalo.

-Proficient in Spanish and English and be able to communicate verbally and in writing with Latin American collaborators.
