Job Description:
The Department of Psychiatry seeks a postdoctoral scholar to work in the laboratory of Dr. Suzanne Gonzalez. Dr. Gonzalez` lab focuses on determining the genetic and biological bases of complex psychiatric disorders including Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder, and Major Depression. The group pursues these interests in diverse populations by utilizing approaches from statistical genetics, population genetics, human genetics and genetic epidemiology.

The long-term goal is to apply a multiple disciplinary approach using bioinformatics, genetics, molecular and cell biology, and translational studies to identify genetic mutations that confer risk and therapeutic targets in psychiatric disorders via nextgeneration sequencing and genomic datasets.

Previous experience or fluency in large-scale data analysis, statistics, computational genomics, bioinformatics, and/or related field are highly desirable. The successful candidate will be expected work on ongoing projects: quantitative computational methods applied to microarray and next generation sequencing technologies to map and better understand the biological functions of genes; assess genetic variants conferring risk to psychiatric disease in diverse populations; identify the genetic basis of psychiatric disorders in admixed populations; identify how variations in the sequence of the genome may be associated with susceptibility and resistance to mental disorders; and investigate how variations within the genome influence the expression of genes to alter function. Manuscript and grant preparation are also expected. Strong writing/communication skills and strong programming skills are highly desirable. The successful applicant will be able to present their work at national and international research conferences.

Job Qualifications:

Candidates should have a Ph.D., M.D. or equivalent doctorate in statistical genetics, population genetics, computational biology, bioinformatics, human genetics, or related field. Candidates should have proficiency in programming (e.g. Perl or Python) and statistical computing (e.g. R). Applicants must possess strong programming, English and analytical skills. Candidates should have a track record of scientific productivity and/or leadership.
