Job Description:
The candidate will play a lead role in the development of an open innovation research platform for the development of advanced cell factories. This position will act as the SCRUM master for the software development team at UCSD, act as the primary technical interface with other international sections and work closely with subject matter experts in the Systems Biology Research Group (SBRG).

The candidate will write high-quality software, use skills as an advanced specialized bioinformatics programming professional with an in-depth understanding of computational algorithms to identify and resolve a wide range of highly complex issues & software bugs where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors. This incumbent will also develop documentation, create comprehensive tests for the platform and lead or mentor a team of bioinformatics and other programming professionals.

Qualifications:

  • In-depth knowledge of bioinformatics methods, applications programming, web development and data structures.
  • In-depth knowledge of bioinformatics programming design, modification and implementation.
  • Advanced understanding of relational databases, web interfaces, and operating systems.
  • Expert level skills in a number of these areas: Data modeling, relational database design, development of public, documented REST APIs.
  • Experience with web application architecture, with experience scaling to complex applications with highly-polished user experiences.
  • Demonstrated in-depth knowledge of web, application and data security concepts and methods.
  • Highly experience (10 years) in the architecture, design, and development of large-scale applications.
  • Demonstrated experience and self-motivated developer capable of writing high quality and high performing software.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and testing large applications with continuous integration.
  • Excellent understanding of full life-cycle software development with Agile methodologies.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of developing computational applications.
  • Experience deploying scalable applications, considering caching, security, containers, and cloud deployment.
  • Ability to communicate technical information in a clear and concise manner. Advanced interpersonal skills in order to work with technical and non-technical personnel at all levels in the organization, including senior project leadership.
  • Excellent project leadership and management skills. Ability to lead a team, meet deadlines and advanced problem-solving skills. Advanced ability to interface with management on a regular basis.
  • Demonstrated broad problem solving skills. Self-starter and strong team contributor and have experience with mentoring junior level developers.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including ability to effectively present technical topics to large groups with potentially varied levels of technical sophistication.
