Department/Program & College Description:

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (www.las.iastate.edu) at Iowa State University ( ISU ) has begun a major interdisciplinary hiring initiative (www.las.iastate.edu/faculty-careers) to help foster collaborative research and teaching, especially in its Signature Themes (www.las.iastate.edu/research/signature-themes/). As part of this initiative, the Departments of Computer Science (www.cs.iastate.edu), Mathematics and Statistics (www.stat.iastate.edu) have launched a new 2-3 year hiring effort to expand research and education in the area of Bioinformatics and Computational Biology ( BCB ). This initiative is further supported and complemented by several other new hires in the themes of Data-Rich Environments and Biological Structures & Systems, as well as recent big data hires in the biological and engineering sciences.

The Department of Mathematics houses an active research environment consisting of over 70 mathematicians and 85 graduate students. As part of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the Department is strongly committed to advancing the frontiers of knowledge in both pure and applied mathematics. Members of the faculty are active in cross-campus collaboration, as well as in professional organizations including the AMS , SIAM , and the MAA . For further information about the department, please visit our website at http://www.math.iastate.edu.

Iowa State University’s BCB program was the first BCB graduate program in the country. As such, cutting-edge research and education in BCB are nurtured through long-standing interdisciplinary interactions among diverse faculty members across STEM fields. Outstanding computational and biological research facilities and programs support the BCB research and education endeavor and include the Laurence H. Baker Center for Bioinformatics and Biological Statistics, the Center for Integrative Animal Genomics, and the Plant Sciences Institute. A dynamic faculty, a moderate teaching load (typically four courses per year with a course reduction to three courses per academic year for active researchers and possible further reductions for new or junior faculty), a strong graduate program, and a vibrant research environment with well-funded research colleagues provide an excellent academic environment for research.
