Job Description:
Performs computational research in the Division of Epigenetics and Transcriptional Engineering in the Department of Systems Biology. Works on a variety of computational biology and genomics projects centered on therapeutic target identification. Will work on internal and external datasets, including next generation bulk and single cell sequencing data, high-throughput genetic screen data, and protein/compound interaction data, etc. Will develop algorithms and analysis strategies to generate focused hypotheses for target identification/validation. Involves in data interpretation and report. A critical component of the job will be the close collaboration with a team of investigators and scientists in biomedical research.

Position Accountabilities:

The following are essential job accountabilities:

1. Research:

 Establish the computational research program in the Division and the Department, including the design, analysis, review, summary, interpretation and report of the computational research.

 Collaborate in a team setting to develop platforms for bioinformatics and biostatistics data analyses.

 Apply or develop new algorithms/data-mining techniques for integrative analysis and visualization of multi-dimensional data-sets for target discovery.

 Integrate genomic and experimental data using appropriate statistical methods to facilitate therapeutic target discoveries.

 Contribute to new ideas, actively engage in scientific discussion, provide expertise to inform discussion of new concepts.

 Contribute to scientific writing including manuscripts and grant applications.

 Review scientific manuscripts and grant applications.

 Contribute to quality controls, verification of scientific results, rigor and robustness of scientific data.

 Mentoring junior members of the Department including post-doctoral fellows and technologists as relevant for computational research activities.

 Develop and maintain expertise in a suite of computational biology and biostatistics.

2. Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to maintain certification/licensure, and/or keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.

3. Attends departmental meetings as required and participates in the department continuing education program.

4. Follows established City of Hope and department policies, procedures, objectives, performance improvement, attendance, safety, environmental, and infection control guidelines, including adherence to the workplace Code of Conduct and Compliance Plan. Practices a high level of integrity and honesty in maintaining confidentiality.

5. Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

Position Qualifications:

Minimum Education: Ph.D. degree in Biology, Bioinformatics or equivalent

Minimum Experience: Five years of relevant work experience in bioinformatics or computational biology

 Solid understanding of bioinformatics databases and software.

 Good understanding of biological processes, such as oncology, genetics, and pharmacology.

 Extensive experiences in sequencing-based data analysis, pipeline development and quality control (such as RNA-seq, ChIP-seq, ATAC-seq, RRBS).

 Proficient in writing programs for data analysis using R, Unix, Python, etc.

 Experienced in bioinformatics tools including IGV/UCSC Genome Browser, TCGA, Samtools, Bedtools, DAVID, Tophat, BWA, HTseq, RSeQC, GATK, Picard, cellranger, PARTEK, IPA, CLCBIO, etc.
