Job Description:

Duties:

To develop, provide informatics support, and take a lead role in data analysis, method development, software evaluation, and training in order to support Next Generation Sequence patient testing at UIHC.

Examine data from high throughput sequencing instruments, proteomics, public databases and other sources, and performs analyses typically including discovery of genetic variants, differential gene expression, abnormal regulation, and disease associations. Assist in the development molecular biology computing needs with an emphasis on analysis and management of large data sets. Participate in developing computer algorithms or devices of various types for empirical studies, including hardware, software, and statistical methods. Maintains knowledge of current bioinformatics methods, modifying them or combining them as needed for specific goals.

Provide downstream analysis of sets of genes thought to be differentially regulated to provide biological insight into the nature of the underlying mechanisms.

Experience analyzing next-generation sequencing results for exome re-sequencing and cancer panels with emphasis on both ion torrent and Illumina data sets.

Provide help and training with scientific software, databases, and other computational resources to faculty, staff and students.

Evaluate data to establish relevance to the problem or problems being evaluated and in preparation for assay validation. Prepare research results for publication in reports, papers, journals, books and other media. Assist in developing new proposals and protocols for the development of new testing and obtain support for new and/or continuing research activities.

Education Required:

  • A Ph.D. degree in a Molecular Biology, Bioinformatics or Biostatistics or related discipline is required.
Experience Required:
  • Working knowledge in performing statistical analyses is required as is experience in the R statistical language.
  • Three (3) – five (5) years experience in the analysis of next generation DNA sequencing, comparative genomics, SNP and data analyses for clinical diagnostic testing is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative environment is required.
  • Demonstrated experience working effectively in a diverse environment.
Desirable Qualifications:
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
  • Three (3) – five (5) years of experience with computing clusters and linux operating systems is highly desired.
  • Three (3) – five (5) years of experience with programming languages such as Perl, Python, or Java is highly desired.
  • Three (3) – five (5) years of performing analysis in R statistical programming is highly desired.
