Bioinformatician

Job Description:
We are seeking a Bioinformatics Data Scientist to support our microbiome and human genomics teams. This individual will be responsible for supporting R&D experimental efforts by utilizing analytical pipelines that enable translation of biological questions into impactful conclusions. The position requires data exploration with R&D scientists and the ability to distill and relay complex scientific concepts to a variety of members within the organization. The position will involve integrating into the current suite of tools used by DNA Genotek for analysis as well as opportunities to expand the scope of our analysis competencies.

REQUIRED TECHNICAL SKILLS**:

• Ability to generate, analyze and interpret microbiota, metagenomic and metabolomic data sets to identify and quantify shifts in microbial and functional ecology between communities
• In depth understanding of analytical pipelines utilized in the microbiome space (e.g. mothur, QIIME, UPARSE, metagenomeSeq, phyloseq)
• Experience analyzing raw microbiome 16S ITS, metagenome, virome and whole genome (human and microbial) WGS sequencing data
• Experience in transcriptome analysis of human and complex microbial samples
• Experience in analysis of methylSeq data
• Experience with long-read sequencing data (Nanopore, PacBio)
• Experience with statistical analysis of experimental data
• Experience with statistical analysis tools (R, MATLAB, SAS etc.)
• Hands on experience in modifying open source bioinformatics/biostatistics tools to suit a novel study design and application
• Comfortable working with command line tools in a Linux shell environment

**REQUIRED RESEARCH SKILLS**:

• Proven ability to translate biological questions into robust, appropriately powered experimental designs and analytical frameworks
• Proven ability to independently manage several bioinformatics projects at once
• Must demonstrate a solid scientific proficiency, creativity, ability to collaborate effectively with others, and independent thought processes
• Superior oral and written communication skills as well as ability to produce scientifically rigorous and intuitive data visualizations

**BENEFECIAL SKILLS/EXPERTISE**:

Experience with genome and metagenome assembly tools such as Celera WGS assembler, Canu, Velvet, SPAdes, IDBA-UD, MEGAHIT
• Experience in developing novel quantitative methods, metrics, and analytical procedures for evaluating and interpreting microbiome datasets
• Experience in coding with R, Python, PERL etc. Experience in analysis and interpretation of Mass Spec data is desirable

**EDUCATION**:

• M.Sc. or Ph.D. in computational biology, bio-statistics, bioinformatics, or applied mathematics
• 2+ years experience specifically in bioinformatics & NGS data analysis using scripting languages
