Job Description:
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and highly-motivated bioinformatician, with good interpersonal skills and a committed team member to join the Molecular Diagnostics department. The post-holder will develop and maintain a secure data flow for the analysis and sharing of clinical genomic data. The department is located in the Centre for Molecular Pathology, works alongside Cancer Research UK in their Stratified Medicine Programme and is a Genomic Medicine Centre (as part of the West London GMC) leading the cancer stream of the 100,000 Genomes Project.

The Centre for Molecular Pathology is a state-of-the-art facility bringing together translational science and molecular diagnostics and is one of the few specialised laboratories in molecular diagnostics of cancer in Europe. The department provides a reference Molecular Diagnostics Service for solid tumours and haematological malignancies for several NHS Trusts and Cancer Networks, as well as leading innovation in translational research and clinical trials.

We are seeking an enthusiastic bioinformatician to develop data sharing and analysis pipelines to improve diagnosis and patient outcomes. The post holder will be required to take responsibility for maintenance of a secure webserver to support specialised genomic molecular diagnostics investigations in tumour tissues. The post holder will be involved in the maintenance and validation of the facility, including the implementation of analysis pipelines for clinical NGS and other genomic protocols for personalised cancer medicine and the analysis using genetics software and bioinformatic tools. In addition the post holder will be required to support activities such as quality management, including compliance with laboratory accreditation standards, training and the department’s translational research programme. Good communication and team working skills are essential.

The successful applicant must have a BSc degree in computational biology or equivalent and ideally a higher degree in bioinformatics. They must be familiar with Linux/UNIX and programming in scripting languages including Perl, Python and RUBY. They should also have knowledge of high performance computing systems and demonstrate knowledge of bioinformatics tools and genomic databases. Experience in the development and maintenance of webservers and webpages is desirable Candidates must understand the importance of maintaining the confidentiality of clinical data.
