Job Description:
The post exists within programme 5 of the CTLGH (biorepository and data-driven portal); the purpose of the job is to analyse genomic and genetic data generated by the centre – including large de novo assembly projects and large whole-genome re-sequencing projects; to generate reference data sets; to integrate, compare, analyse and interpret genomic data on farm animals; to organise and store data and metadata; to feed data and analyses into the CTLGH portal; and to contribute to research papers.

The post will join programme 5 of the centre for tropical livestock genetics and health (CTLGH), led by Mick Watson (Roslin) and Steve Kemp (ILRI). You will be integrated with Mick Watson’s research group, which focuses on the development and use of bioinformatics methods and software to analyse large genomic datasets relevant to farm animal health and food security.

Main Responsibilities:

-To assist with the analysis of genome sequence and genotyping data from programmes within the CTLGH - 60%

-To feed the results of analyses into the CTLGH data portal, and into public databases - 10%

-Take a lead role in the writing up of results for publication and the dissemination of sequencing data into the public domain - 10%

-Transfer knowledge and skills to collaborators within and without The Roslin Institute and the CTLGH and to participate fully in the CTLGH training programme - 10%

-Continually update knowledge and understanding in the field of bioinformatics and genomics - 5%

-Creation, awareness, maintenance and adherence to all relevant SOPs, health and safety and quality assurance documents - 5%

Planning and Organising:

The postholder will be responsible for choosing appropriate software for data analyses, planning compute requirements, and planning, organising and implementing pipelines for genome assembly and genome re-sequencing. The postholder will be responsible for finding suitable datasets in the public domain, and will define a plan of analysis that will extract maximum valuable information from those datasets. The post-holder will need to deliver analyses and projects to a pre-agreed schedule defined by the deliverables of the CTLGH project. The post-holder will liaise with other members of the CTLGH to provide advice and support on data analysis. The post-holder will be responsible for the storage of data and meta-data such that it is easily discoverable and understandable by third parties.

Problem Solving:

The postholder will develop and optimise bioinformatics pipelines for the integration and analysis of several next-generation sequencing and genotyping data sets, both to provide answers to specific questions/hypotheses, and also to generate reference datasets useful to the CTLGH. We anticipate that the integration of such datasets may require the development of some novel scripts/software

Decision Making:

The postholder will be expected to make informed decisions in terms of which software packages to use during analyses; which data to put onto the portal and when; when analyses are finished and ready for publication

Knowledge, Skills and Experience Needed for the Job:

Essential:

Will be expected to have a degree in the biological sciences with a subsequent qualification (e.g. MSc, PhD - or near completion) in bioinformatics or a degree in computer science, mathematics or equivalent technical subject with subsequent qualification or experience in the biological sciences. Experience of analysing large next-generation sequencing datasets. The ability to communicate complex information clearly, orally and in writing. Use of a scripting language (Perl/Python/R). Works comfortably on Linux.

Desirable:

Experience of analysing genomic data; experience of Ensembl; experience of web-technologies.

The Roslin Institute at the University of Edinburgh is a world class research institute with a track-record of delivering cutting-edge research in animal genetics and genomics. Housed in a new £60m building, the Institute undertakes top-class basic and translational science to tackle some of the most pressing issues in animal health and welfare, their implications for human health and for the role of animals in the food chain.

The Centre for Tropical Livestock Genetics and Health (CTLGH) is a collaborative centre with The Roslin Institute, Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC) and the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) as founding partners. With initial funding from the Gates Foundation and matched funding from the University of Edinburgh, SRUC and ILRI, CTLGH has an ambitious programme of research to drive farm animal improvement in Africa via studies of host genetics.
