Job Description:
Applications are invited for a Bioinformatician Post in the Professor Patrick Chinnery Group

The neurogenetics group (Prof Patrick Chinnery) is seeking a bioinformatician to join a team of informaticians and laboratory scientists who are studying the role of somatic mutations in neurodegenerative diseases. Our recent work has shown that de novo mutations occur during early brain development, forming clusters of cells in the adult brain that contain somatic mutations. The post holder will lead the bioinformatics analysis of this programme which will determine when and how these mutations occur, and whether they contribute to neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease.

The post holder will work on a range of datasets including ultra-high depth whole genome sequencing from human brain samples taken throughout life, including single cell analysis. Additional data will include linked transcriptomic and epigenomic datasets. The main tasks will be:

  • Curation, integration and analysis of complex 'omic datasets, including single cell whole genome and RNA sequencing.
  • Development of novel tools and pipelines to facilitate this analysis
  • Close working with a wider informatics group and laboratory scientists, contributing to the design and interpretation of laboratory experiments
  • Presentation at workshops and conferences, and the opportunity to train others.
The post will be based physically within the MBU housed in the Wellcome Trust/MRC Building on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, and involve collaboration with bioinformatics teams across the campus, and closely collaborating groups at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI) and the Wellcome Trust Sanger Centre. The MRC Mitochondrial Biology Unit includes eight other research groups studying the fundamental biology of mitochondria, how this changes in disease, and how to harness this knowledge to develop treatments. The unit has state-of-the-art facilities available to group members.
