Job Description:
The Department of Cell & Developmental Biology at the University of Michigan Medical School (Ann Arbor) is seeking a highly motivated Bioinformatician-Computational Biologist Associate. This is dual role full-time position. The selected candidate will work 80% in a specialized lab, which includes a combination of lab data generation and analysis. For the remaining 20%, the person will serve as the departmental Bioinformatics resource, which includes performing data analysis for a variety of experiments within the department.

Experience with Drosophila handling, preparing single cell mRNA library for Illumina sequencing, and single cell transcriptome analysis and cell type clustering is required for this position.

Responsibilities*

80% Cell Biology Lab:

  • Conduct and troubleshoot experiments
  • Record and analyze data
  • Organize data for publication
  • Edit and co-author manuscripts
  • Explain and demonstrate technology and equipment capabilities, operations, limitations, and outcomes
  • Supervise junior scientists
  • Participate in weekly lab meetings and journal clubs
  • Organize and maintain lab databases
20% CDB Bioinformatics Resource
  • Assess and analyze needs of department customers, this includes developing appropriate protocols, writing reports, and delivering results to the customer.
  • Guide PIs in department on bioinformatics analyses
  • Use knowledge of the biological question and computational methods
  • Communicate with PIs before, during and after analysis to educate and ensure the customer has an accurate understating of both the data and the analysis
  • Prepare summary presentations of the results (e.g., methods, data quality, biological interpretation, graphics) suitable for publication
  • Continue professional development by regularly reviewing bioinformatics literature, learning new methods, skills, and techniques in bioinformatics
Required Qualifications*
  • Master’s degree and three years’ experience or PhD or equivalent combination of experience and education)
  • Ph.D. degree in cell biology/biochemistry is strongly preferred
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Contribute to the completion of project goals in a timely manner
  • Have mastery of one or more scripting/programming languages (Python and R preferred)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, as well as interpersonal skills contributing to a strong team environment are required.
