The Samples, Phenotypes and Ontologies Team at EMBL-EBI seeks an enthusiastic, highly motivated bioinformatician to work with the Biosamples database team as part of the Global Alliance for Genomics and Health (GA4GH) initiative. This is a position specific to this project to ensure that human disease biological sample information can be integrated and made available worldwide. The BioSamples database at EMBL-EBI integrates biological samples from a wide variety of sources, applying standards and ontologies to this data. In 2016 it has grown to contain over 5 million samples. The GA4GH initiative underlies the foundation of data sharing and processing for genomic medicine. The metadata task team of GA4GH is designing datamodels to ensure sample, individual and technical metadata is completely interoperable and can be used by research groups across the globe. A key component of this is the development of an API for data exchange using data from the BioSamples Database. In this role, you’ll be working directly with the data to find, integrate and apply standards and ontologies to human disease sample records. You’ll be part of the Samples, Phenotypes and Ontologies Team – a multidisciplinary team of over 20 scientists, bioinformaticians and software developers – and working directly with members of the BioSamples Team and other members of the GA4GH group, both within the EBI and internationally. This post offers the challenges and excitement of working at the forefront of genomics and clinical data science, and as such you’ll need to be self-motivated, eager and have excellent communication skills. This position offers exciting opportunities to work on a large, established bioinformatics database and to take initiative in the mapping and alignment of data to ontologies. You’ll also gain experience in API development, and you’ll have the opportunity to help build a RESTful API over data in the BioSamples database to make samples available to GA4GH. This post would be perfect for a recent bioinformatics graduate who would like to improve their development skills, but with a background in Biology. You should be self-motivated and capable of working both independently and with a closely interacting team of scientists in an international academic environment. You’ll need to have experience of software development in at least one programming language, and if you have worked in a collaborative coding environment or an agile development team in the past you’ll be at the front of the queue. An interest in ontologies and semantic web technologies would be an advantage. Qualifications and Experience: The ideal candidate will have an undergraduate degree in a Biomedical Science and a masters degree in Bioinformatics. Computer Science graduates will be considered, but need to demonstrate a keen interest in the application of computational techniques to biomedical data (for example, developing software to solve biological problems in a thesis); collaborative coding and Agile software development processes are desired. Opportunities will be provided for self-growth. These include working in a highly-skilled team on the Wellcome genome campus, a hub of scientific and technical expertise with many trainings and seminars available.
