Job Description:
Are you a bioinformatician with an eye for design? Can you grapple with complex data and work out how to present them to the world in intuitive ways? Are you excited about new front-end technologies and frameworks? If so, this is the role for you!

The Samples, Phenotypes and Ontologies team are looking to recruit an enthusiastic, highly motivated developer to join their team. You’ll be working on the user interface for the GWAS Catalog (www.ebi.ac.uk/gwas), the major resource worldwide for capturing information about the genetic basis of disease from scientific literature.

The GWAS Catalog presents a really interesting challenge for capturing and representing complex biological association data and presenting this information to users of the Catalog in intuitive, easy to understand and visually appealing ways. The Catalog currently presents association data via a Solr-based search interface and an SVG-based diagram (www.ebi.ac.uk/gwas/diagram). In this project you’ll be working with both of these areas of the website to improve usability, extend the range of search options, and develop new visualisations for particular types of search (for example, new pages that present all the key pieces of information about a particular study).

In this role you’ll be working within the Samples, Phenotypes and Ontologies Team alongside developers, bioinformaticians and ontologists, but as part of the GWAS Catalog Project you’ll also be working closely with data curators and members of the Variation Annotation Team. You’ll also be interacting with the wider GWAS Catalog group, including those at the NHGRI, and users of the GWAS Catalog within the UK and internationally.

Qualifications and Experience:

This is a short-term role perfect for a recent Bioinformatics graduate or a Computer Sciences graduate with a strong interest in moving into the Bioinformatics domain. It would be ideal for someone with some web development experience, good ideas on website design and an interest in data visualisation or user experience testing. This position represents a fantastic opportunity to gain hands-on experience at working on a resource with major scientific impact in a world-leading bioinformatics institute. To be eligible for this role you’ll need to demonstrate experience in web development, especially a commonly used framework like Bootstrap, Angular.js or React. Experience with a visualisation framework like D3 or vue.js would be an advantage, but as long as you’re enthusiastic and keen to learn you’ll be considered.

Additional Info:
The GWAS Catalog is an international collaboration between the European Bioinformatics Institute and the National Health Genomics Research Institute (NHGRI) in the USA. Founded in 2008, it has grown into the “go to” resource for looking up findings relating human genotype to phenotype associations. It is a high quality, manually curated resource with a small team of curators reviewing every published genome wide association study. The GWAS Catalog was relocated to the EBI in 2015 with an entirely new infrastructure based on modern, industry standard technologies like Spring Boot, Thymeleaf and Bootstrap.
