Job Description:
The Genomic Analysis and Bioinformatics Shared Resource is searching for a candidate who will be responsible for providing consultation, training, and performing analysis of genomic and proteomic data in collaboration with Duke investigators and their lab groups. The individual will independently interact with clients of the shared resource to provide start-to-finish analytical support for projects, from determining each project’s goals and priorities, establishing the necessary computational infrastructure, troubleshooting the data production, and then utilize the most appropriate analytic methods to meet the investigator’s needs. In addition to direct client interactions, the incumbent will be expected to develop custom analytic methodologies and toolkits with the purpose of advancing genomics research within the Duke community.

Specific duties include the following:

-Work independently with common informatics methods and toolsets to analyze high-throughput genomic and proteomic datasets generated by Duke investigators.

-Independently meet with investigators at all stages of a project to ensure study design, data analysis, and data provenance are all being addressed and are progressing.

-Attend lab meetings, present updates, assist in the interpretation of results, generate publication-quality figures, and author publication-quality description of methods.

-Work closely with a team of software developers and IT professionals to create custom toolkits and analytic methods to meet the needs of investigators.

-Provide pre-award support to Duke investigators by writing and editing methods sections of grants that address the analysis of high-throughput genomic data.

-Read the primary bioinformatics literature to identify state-of-the-art methods and toolkits that may assist Duke investigators in the analysis of their data.

-Co-teach data analysis workshops and lectures.

This position reports directly to the Director of the Genomic Analysis and Bioinformatics Shared Resource.

Education:

Work requires a M.S. in the biological sciences with demonstrable computational skills or a M.S. in computer science with a strong interest in biology/genomics.

Experience:

Work requires at least 5 years of experience in bioinformatics.Experience with web-based bioinformatics tools, public domain biological databases and software tools for sequence, domain and structural analysis. Extensive familiarity with and development of computational tools in biology that use genomic data to generate biological hypotheses. Experience with a procedural language, proficient in Java, Perl, C, web design, DNA genome informatics, proteomics informatics, statistics, and computer science. Experience with relational databases and SQL helpful. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

While the responsibilities of the core facility are vast, the candidate should have experience working with at least two of the following high-throughput genomic technologies: high-throughput sequencing, gene expression microarray, or proteomics/metabolomics. The individual should show an eagerness to learn about any technology that they are not currently familiar with.

To accomplish all of the duties that this position will need to perform:

-Preferred Ph.D. in bioinformatics or a related field

-M.S. in a similar field with at least 5 years of experience working with high-throughput genomic technologies.

Ideally, the candidate would have experience in a data analysis service role. The candidate must have experience with the standard ‘omics technology data formats and data analysis toolkits. The candidate must be efficient in a scripting language such as Perl or Python, have experience in a statistical programming environment such as R or Matlab, and have background knowledge of common statistical, data mining, and machine learning methodologies used in genomics research. In addition to technical ability, the candidate must have excellent communication skills and be able to articulate bioinformatic topics to both bioinformaticians and to life science investigators.
