Job Description:
The Wellcome Sanger Institute plays a leading role in both the Genome10K Vertebrate Genome Project (VGP) and also the Genome Reference Consortium (GRC) and we are seeking to recruit a Bioinformatician to join the Genome Reference Informatics Team to help us produce and interpret high quality genome reference assemblies for human and other vertebrates. High-quality genome assemblies are needed to address fundamental questions in biology and disease, to identify species most genetically at risk for extinction, and to preserve genetic information for posterity. However, most vertebrate species are lacking such reference genome assemblies. The Genome10K Vertebrate Genome Project (VGP) has begun collecting samples and generating data to produce references, initially for one species from each vertebrate order, and is currently focussing on identifying and implementing a suitable assembly strategy. You will have sound knowledge of genomics and informatics, ideally with experience of genome assembly and analysis software, are proficient at developing and implementing your own software solutions, engage with current genomics research and are enthusiastic about trying out new approaches. We need you to assemble and scaffold genome data, analyse the resulting assemblies and identify opportunities for improvement in assembly software and strategy. You will also be involved in the annotation and further analysis and interpretation of the produced assemblies. This role requires an investigative and solution-focussed mind set and excellent communication skills to work effectively within two large international consortia. Essential Skills: • Degree in a biological or computational topic • Good programming skills (Perl, Python, R, MySQL) • Comfortable operating in a UNIX/LINUX environment • Demonstrable experience in designing and implementing bioinformatics software • Knowledge of sequencing and genome mapping technologies plus current genomics research • Excellent problem-solving skills combined with being proactive and self-motivated Ideal Skills: •Experience in working with distributed computing multi-node compute systems/clusters (HPC/HTC such as LSF/SGE) • Experience with genome assembly and genome analysis software including standalone and web-based packages, as well as widely used public biodata databases & genome browsers • Knowledge/experience with version control • Knowledge of population genetics methods • PhD or adequate experience • Web development experience Bioinformatician/ Senior Bioinformatician – Genome Reference Salary in the region of £25,440 – £30,782 (Bioinformatician) plus excellent benefits Salary in the region of £36,373 – £44,011 (Senior Bioinformatician) plus excellent benefits Permanent / Open Contract
