Job Description:
The focus of the Bioinformatics Analyst is to analyze pathogen DNA and RNA sequences from clinical and environmental samples to support veterinary clinical testing applications. Though based in the Molecular Diagnostic laboratory, which is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and facilities, including high-throughput automated extraction and liquid handling systems and a variety of platforms for PCR and next-generation sequencing, the Analyst will provide support at an organizational level.

The Bioinformatics Analyst acts under the direction of faculty members. They thrive in an outcome-driven environment with clear deadlines, enjoy working on routine and detailed tasks, seek opportunities to develop new assays, and is able to identify and troubleshoot problems using standard operating procedures. They are extremely reliable, flexible in dealing with unpredictable workloads, and work well under pressure in a team-based environment.

Responsibilities include :

  • Ongoing verification of primer and probe sequences used in routine PCR testing
  • Perform computationally intensive analyses of DNA and RNA data
  • Create and maintain databases using various platforms, including Microsoft Access
  • Develop analysis pipelines for next-generation sequencing (NGS) data; application of pipelines to clinical and environmental samples
  • Automation, generation, and distribution of complex data analysis reports for internal and external client consumption
  • Assist with ongoing projects throughout the organization; support infectious disease efforts of units such as Bacteriology and Virology
  • Contribute to scientific publications; provide data, and perform literature reviews
  • Represent the AHDC at meetings and conferences
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Employees may be required to work outside of normal business hours, including occasional holidays, evenings, and weekends.

This is a three year term position; reappointment will be contingent upon funding and performance.

Required Qualifications :

  • Bachelor’s degree in computational biology, microbial genetics, bioinformatics, computer science, or a related field
  • Two to three years of programming experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Proficiency with various programming languages (Python, R, bash, Perl, Ruby, Java, C++, etc.), with the ability to learn new languages quickly
  • Proficiency using various operating systems, such as Linux, Windows, and CentOS
  • Experience with NGS data/software, DNA copy number analysis, and/or genomic analyses
  • Basic understanding of genomics and biostatistics
  • Ability to clearly communicate complex data professionally to varying audiences
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills; ability to identify and troubleshoot problems.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines; successful management of simultaneous development projects
  • Ability to handle sensitive, confidential information with tact and discretion
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Works well both individually and within a team environment
  • Ability to push, pull, lift, or carry up to 10 pounds
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in computer science, mathematics, bioinformatics, genetics, or a related field
  • Knowledge of viral and bacterial pathogen evolution
  • Experience analyzing viral and bacterial related data
  • Familiarity with mammalian genomics and functional genomics
