Summary: We are looking for a Bioinfomatics Applications Specialist. This person is responsible for the installation, support and maintenance of bioinformatics analysis tools serving R&D departments. Together with the Research IT department, the Bioinformatics Application Specialist monitors applications usage, coordinate with users data architecture best practices and communicates about new tools, changes and developments. The post holder evaluates, installs, and parameterizes commercial or open source software in a High Performance Computing (HPC) Linux cluster environment to support data analysis pipelines. This role requires communication skills, bioinformatics experience, familiarity with the Linux environment, and the ability to adjust software to its environment, as well as support analysis pipelines. Responsibilities: * Create and support bioinformatics application pipelines * Perform computational validation experiments to assess software feasibility * Install, maintain, and upgrade bioinformatics software applications and middleware * Parameterize software applications for a specific use case * Able to construct wrapper scripts to aggregate code into an analysis workflow * Troubleshoot application issues * Partner with R-IT and business to devise training activities and user best practices guidelines to align with cross-department controlled vocabulary. * Contribute in the software development efforts, processes and procedures, and guidelines to ensure they meet business rules and government regulations

Requirements

This position requires a minimum of a MS degree (PhD perferred), and 4+ years experience with Bioinformatics/NGS applications in an HPC environment. Additional minimum requirements include: * Experience with molecular biology techniques * Familiarity with public bioinformatics resources (NCBI, UCSC, Ensembl, UniProt) * Familiarity with sequence manipulation software (MacVector, DNAStar, VectorNTI, SnapGene) * Experience with large data sets and challenges associated with them Preferred background: * Familiarity with programmatic access (via API, MySQL, etc.) to public bioinformatics resources (NCBI, UCSC, Ensembl, UniProt) * 3+ years experience with Linux application development tools (autoconf, make, gcc, g77, cmake, etc) * Familiar with various code repositories (git, subversion, CVS) * Experience with job schedulers/queue managers (SGE, PBS, LSF) * Scripting proficiency (Ruby, Shell, Perl, Python, Java, or similar) * Code debugging, profiling and optimization techniques Soft Skills: * Ability to understand end-user needs and user experience * Is an independent worker and proactively seeks to innovate * Demonstrated problem solving and analytical skills * Excellent verbal and written communication skills * Ability to work independently and as part of a team * Willingness to work in and adapt to a fast paced, ever changing environment * Attention to detail and a passion for solving complex and interesting problems * Analytical with the desire to measure the effectiveness of new features * Welcome and respect ideas from partners, business stakeholder and technical experts Level is commensurate with experience.
