ISCB Job Board

Bioinformatics Data AnalystBaylor College of MedicineUnited States-Texas-Houston One data analyst position is available immediately through the Neurological Research Institute (NRI) at Baylor College of Medicine and in collaboration with the Neurodegeneration Consortium at the MD Anderson Cancer Center.  The analyst will be a part of the laboratory of Zhandong Liu, PhD at the NRI and be co-mentored by Joshua Shulman, MD, PhD and William J. Ray, PhD.  Primary responsibilities include application and development of bioinformatics and biostatistics algorithms to
process and analyze multiple types of high-throughput genomics data for neurodegenerative diseases.  The successful candidate will also be expected to integrate large amount of public and private genomics data, apply and develop high quality analytical pipelines.  This position is available as part of a four-year research project with specific goals of developing therapeutic treatments for Alzheimer disease.

The NRI brings together world experts in neuroscience, computer science, and applied mathematics to pursue collaborative, interdisciplinary basic and translational research on a variety of neurological and neurodevelopmental disorders. Website: http://www.nri.texaschildrens.org/index.aspx

The Neurodegeneration Consortium (NDC) is a multi-institutional collaboration with the goal of finding therapies that will slow, stop, or reverse the progression of Alzheimer’s disease. The NDC consists of leading basic scientists at Baylor College of Medicine and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology who work in concert with the drug discovery center at the Institute for Applied Cancer Science at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. Scientists at the NDC are identifying drug targets that modulate pathways implicated in Alzheimer’s disease by combining novel genetic screens, advanced cellular and animal models, and chemical biology.

At the NRI, the laboratory of Prof. Zhandong Liu focuses on the integrative modeling of transcription and signaling pathway activation.  The lab develops algorithms for the analysis of gene expression arrays and next-generation sequencing data, and is especially interested in addressing fundamental biological questions through machine learning and mathematical modeling approaches. Website: http://www.liuzlab.org/

Also at the NRI, the Shulman Laboratory (http://www.shulman-lab.org) investigates mechanisms of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease integrating human and model organism (Drosophila, mouse) genetic approaches. We also participate in national and international consortia advancing gene discovery in neurodegenerative disease. The Shulman and Liu laboratories have ongoing collaborations and have joined with the NDC to help discover new Alzheimer’s disease drug targets. The candidate should have (1) a MS or PhD in Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Computer Science, Statistics or a related field, (2) strong mathematical/scientific programming skills in a language such as R or Matlab, and (3) experience with bioinformatics algorithms and large-scale data analysis.  Proficiency in a language such as Python, JAVA, or C/C++ and/or experience with cloud computing is a plus.  Some background in statistics, machine learning, and optimization is necessary, but the candidate will be given opportunities to expand their training in these areas, if desired.Job Information Position Type: Bioinformatics Analyst Start Date: ASAP Duration: Full Time Status: openContact InformationBaylor College of Medicine
