Job Description:
The Bioinformatics team is a high impact group within Hampton Creek that’s building the next generation of computational models to understand the relationships between environmentally sustainable food sources and their functionality. You will be a key member of our core R&D team and essential to the scientific growth of our company. You will be responsible for developing and applying computational techniques to augment a library of algorithms designed to discover novel functionalities related to food systems. You’ll partner with data engineering experts to continue building out our computational infrastructure, and join a multi-disciplinary team of scientists, engineers, and chefs in the search for better, healthier, and more sustainable ways to produce food.

RESPONSIBILITIES

-Lead the analyses and interpretation of scientific data generated by a unique technology platform that fuses the molecular, materials, and food sciences.

-Map the landscape of phylogenetic, chemical, and physical features of novel materials derived from a proprietary plant library.

-Translate scientific questions into testable hypotheses, drawing conclusions from data, and guiding next-step experiments through a sparsely traveled search space.

-Collaborate on the design and development of a highly customized data processing and visualization infrastructure.

-Provide statistical support for the design, interoperation, and assessment of basic and applied experiments.

ATTRIBUTES:

-PhD in Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, or related subject.

-Background in biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, materials science, or food science strongly preferred.

-Proven experience developing and applying computational methods to diverse types of data.

-Deep understanding of theories behind computational methods. Deep theoretical knowledge should be balanced by strong implementation experience.

-Enthusiastic about exploring novel data sets, bringing structure and rigorous thinking to ambiguous phenomena, and extracting maximum information and knowledge from them.

-Loves the challenge of tackling real-world problems and translating them into sets of refined, answerable questions.

-Passionate about the problem domain and understands the role that data and algorithms play as utility tools.

-Comfortable coding in Python, or R, or other scientific programing languages and libraries (like Julia, Lua, Octave, C++/GSL, etc).

-Mission-driven, team player, thinker.
