Job Description:
Your new role:

You will be working on a major resource project, which will have a significant impact on research within the field of genomics.

Working as part of the bioinformatics and molecular biology teams, you will be managing and further developing a web-based phenotype / genomics focused database designed to assist research into infectious disease mechanisms, that will involve web development and programming.

Bringing together elements of molecular genetics, computational science and bioinformatics, this resource will provide information that allows innovative solutions to major global issues to be developed.

You will be developing the existing database structure to support multiple data types and optimise processes, as well as making the database as user-friendly as possible.

You will also help develop and then roll out a data curation tool, and provide training and troubleshooting for major user groups of the resource, potentially using their feedback to optimise the tools and operations. As this project has several major partners, you will be collaborating with a diverse group of researchers across several institutes, working together to deliver the final project.

As well as hands-on coding, there will also be QC related activities, and a need to manage timelines effectively. ***This is initially a 13-14 month fixed term contract, which may extend***

What You'll Need To Succeed

As well as excellent analytical, organisational and team-working skills, you will need to have an innovative approach to problem solving and be able to work both independently and as part of a larger team.

Candidates should have a degree (or equivalent) in bioinformatics, computer science or life sciences, and those with a relevant post-graduate qualification / PhD or significant work experience in this field are preferred.

Major Requirements For The Role Are :

  • Bioinformatics / Computer Science degree or substantial relevant work experience, eg within computational biology
  • Very strong skills in languages such as Perl or Python, with experience in Ruby or JavaScript an advantage;
  • A track record of developing web-based applications, or working as a full stack web-developer;
  • Experience with bioinformatics databases, such as Ensembl or HGMD
  • Knowledge of Linux, Apache Lucene or similar
  • An ability to develop and optimise tools, ideally related to bioinformatics; and
  • Strong collaborative working skills, ideally demonstrated by experience of working with scientists in multiple locations / countries.
  • A background within ontology would be an advantage, but is not necessary.
