Job Description:
The Bioinformatics Engineer position is immediately available in the Pop lab (https://sites.google.com/a/cs.umd.edu/poplab) in the Center for Bioinformatics and Computational Biology at the University of Maryland, College Park. The bioinformatics engineer will support an array of exciting interdisciplinary research projects taking place in the lab and will help increase the impact of our work. The initial focus of the position will be on pathogen and bio-threat identification for bio-defense applications, but other projects in the lab include the study of diarrhea in children from the developing world, the use of non-traditional water sources or the irrigation of crops, as well as other research with strong potential for societal impact. We are specifically looking for an experienced bioinformatics engineer who can lead the development and implementation of sequence analysis workflows in support of current bioinformatics projects in the lab, with focus on sequence classification, functional annotation, and pathway analysis.

Candidates with strong software development and software engineering expertise but without bioinformatics knowledge will also be considered.

Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum qualifications:

● US Citizenship is required by the award funding this position

● Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field

● 3 or more years of software development in bioinformatics or related field

● Advanced UNIX expertise

● Experience with software workload managers (Slurm, Torque, SGE, Condor).

● Expertise in Python

● Expertise in creating and maintaining computational workflows

Preferences:

Desired qualifications:

● Programming proficiency in C/C++

● Experience processing DNA sequencing data and analysis of genomic datasets

● Expertise in parallel/multi-threaded programming

● Expertise in requirements-based software testing and validation
