Job Description:
The Bioinformatics Engineer I in the bioinformatics group at the Division of Genomic Diagnostics (DGD) is an entry-level position in the support of computational environment, workflows, in-house and commercial tools and algorithms focused on the management and general processing of the complex genomic data types associated with diagnostics tests. The successful candidate will support and contribute to various applications and pipelines within the DGD. Job Responsibilities :

Specifically the Bioinformatics Engineer I will:

1. Work with bioinformatics group members to develop and support clinical-grade validated bioinformatics pipelines upstream of lab and clinical interpretation

2. Maintain pipelines by staying current with evolving algorithms and standards, evaluating and incorporating into pipelines

3. Execute robust development testing for commonly used applications such as data processing pipelines and other genomic oriented web applications

4. Define and prioritize requirements for pipeline development over time to incorporate new technologies and platforms via functional communication with bioinformatics group members and bioinformatics end users

5. Implement, update and maintain locally stored data resources required for various analysis tasks.

6. Provide efficient data management support including file transfers, data formatting and manipulation, and basic integration of data from a variety of experimental and reference resources

7. Implement, maintain, and regularly contribute to formal and bioinformatics group-centralized code management system.

8. Adopt appropriate forking and other strategies for robust code development. Apply to general bioinformatics group code base.

Required Education and Experience :

1. BS or MS in computer science, bioinformatics, or a related computational discipline.

2. 0-3 years in applied bioinformatics, computational, and genomics areas

Additional Technical Requirements

Requirements:

1. Strong LINUX expertise required.

2. Familiarity with high-performance computing environment

3. Experience with Python, Java, or other languages required

4. Web-development in modern web frameworks and application maintenance experience preferred

5. Experience with pipeline or workflow development frameworks preferred.

6. Experience with relational and non-relational databases and SQL queries preferred

7. Familiarity with open source and commercial bioinformatics resources and software preferred.

8. Experience with genomic data analysis preferred.

9. Familiarity with source/version control tools (Git, etc.)

10. Knowledge of the working NGS, or other high-throughput technologies and related bioinformatics tools (aligners, variant callers, quality metrics etc.)

11. Familiarity with resources of genomic data sets and analysis tools, such as UCSC Genome Browser, Bioconductor, ENCODE, and NCBI databases is preferred.

12. Accountability and attention to timelines.

13. Excellent organization and communication skills with an emphasis on strong presentation skills

14. Ability to work in a team environment.
