Job Description:
Spend your summer being part of something bigger - improving human health by unlocking the power of the genome. Our program is iAspire - Aspirational Students Pursuing Innovative and Rewarding Experiences. Illumina’s 12-week, global, summer internship program is filled with opportunities to innovate, collaborate, and invest in yourself. Our interns work on relevant projects and programs, right alongside our engineers, scientists and corporate employees. It truly is an opportunity to learn, grow, and become a fully-integrated member of the Illumina community. The variant calling group is focused on developing methods to transform sequencing data into improved health outcomes for rare disease and cancer. The intern in this role will contribute to this objective by researching advanced sequence indexing and structural variant analysis methods that can be used to inform clinical decision making and medical research. The internship will provide an opportunity to investigate recently described compressed indexing techniques and their application to improved discovery of both structural variants and highly diverged loci of medical interest. The research results will be applied to improve inference of clinically important variants in human sequencing data, including inherited and de-novo variation in individuals and somatic mutations in cancer samples.

Requirements:

  • Enrolled in a Ph.D. program in computer science, statistics, bioinformatics, or related field of study
  • Experience developing novel inference and/or machine-learning models
  • Expertise in algorithms and software development using C++/C#/Java or similar
  • Superior ability to communicate scientific methods and results
Preferences:
  • Training or research experience in genomics, population genetics or cancer
  • Experience with next-generation sequencing platforms and data
