Job Description:
The Laboratory Medicine department has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time Bioinformatics Lead to support the development and deployment of bioinformatics applications for our expanding suite of clinical next-generation sequencing assays. The Bioinformatics Lead will act as a lead developer to perform analyses of deep datasets, deploy new algorithms, and develop novel software applications in a state-of-the-art clinical laboratory by working closely with junior bioinformaticists, faculty and scientists to gather code specifications and requirements, assign priorities to bioinformatics staff, monitor team progress on projects, make architectural decisions, and provide technical advice on patches and code changes.

The Bioinformatics Lead will specify, encode, and debug complex software applications to analyze large DNA sequence data files; install and maintain data analysis pipelines; and identify the optimal software and hardware configurations to ensure timely and efficient completion of data analyses. The Bioinformatics Lead will manage assignments to a team of programmers and bioinformaticists to diagnose hardware or software issues, assign programming tasks, and develop software documentation and process definitions.

This Bioinformatics Lead will help maintain and expand our national leadership in clinical Next Generation DNA Sequencing technology by creating novel data analysis tools that enable the deployment of ascendant algorithms and further the advancement of cancer diagnostics and precision medicine.

  • Lead team of bioinformaticists and programmers
  • Develop Next-Generation Sequencing data analysis software pipelines
  • Design and construct applications and databases for efficient laboratory workflow and data management
  • Interface with development team to facilitate director priorities, lead huddles and assign tasks to programmers, review code from programmers, monitor and report progress toward project goals, review and reconcile time cards, provide performance feedback, scheduling, participation in interview, direction/assignment of tasks, etc.
REQUIREMENTS:
  • Bachelors in Computer Science, Engineering, Bioinformatics, Physics, Applied Math or a related discipline OR extensive professional experience in software design and/or development or Bioinformatics AND fluency in Python (although less experienced candidates with extensive expertise in other programming languages will be considered), AND 3-4 years experience:
    • Experience developing software using modern tools and procedures for version control, unit testing, documentation, and code review.
    • Extensive experience with Linux or other Unix-like environments.
    • Demonstrated spoken and written communication and documentation skills.
    • Equivalent education/experience may substitute for all minimum qualifications.
Desired:

Experience with Amazon Web services for scientific computing, experience with next-generation sequencing data analysis, background in biology and/or molecular biology, experience in clinical laboratory environments, experience in regulated environments.
