Job Description:
Berkeley Lab’s Environmental Genomics & Systems Biology Division has an opening for a Bioinformatics Postdoctoral Scholar. This position will be part of the Plant Systems Biology group led by Jenny Mortimer and part of the Feedstocks Division at JBEI. The candidate will develop a sorghum bioinformatics resource for CAZy related genes. This postdoc will use this resource to support transcriptomic and metabolomics analysis of sorghum plants that have been engineered for improved biomass properties.

What You Will Do:

  • Develop an open access database of sorghum CAZy (cazy.org) enzymes, which will support gene discovery and functional characterization for the Feedstocks team.
  • Work with the field trials team to design a harvest plan for engineered plants, collect samples, perform transcriptomics/metabolomics and analyze the data. The outcomes will be used to determine future engineering strategies, in collaboration with other team members.
  • Prepare manuscripts for publication and assist with the development of funding proposals and patents.
  • Participate in group meetings and seminars.
  • Maintain an accurate and detailed electronic scientific logbook of all experiments performed. Store all data generated in an organized and secure way. Ensure that others could duplicate results.
Additional Responsibilities as needed:
  • Responsible for periodic reports to the director of the project, training research assistants and assisting others in the lab who require guidance with data analysis.
  • Provide detailed six-monthly reports that can be used as part of a manuscript for peer reviewed journals.
What is Required:
  • Recent PhD in Bioinformatics, Biology, Biochemistry, Plant Science or related areas within last 3 years.
  • Substantial experience with RNAseq dataset analysis using R.
  • Strong command of python, perl or similar programming language.
  • Experience with building informatics databases (MySQL or similar).
  • Ability to design and conduct experiments independently.
  • Ability to work within a team.
  • Ability to conduct original work that meets the milestones of a larger project and scientific program.
Additional Desired Qualifications:
  • Previous experience with plant molecular biology, plant biochemistry or related subjects.
  • Previous experience of metabolomic analysis of plant tissue.
  • Previous experience of performing RNAseq experiments.
The posting shall remain open until the position is filled.
